hey guys i have a new M&P40 and took it out to the range for the first time. I noticed if the slide is forward and i try to insert a full mag it requires for me to slam the mag in. if i dont do that the mag will not go in all the way. It only does this with a full mag, if its half full it will go in normally. I was told this was normal by S&W but it doesnt seem right and i never had this issue with other guns. any input?

My Mp40c is the same way. If you leave the slide open on mine the full mag will just snap right in. But if it's closed you got to push it in pretty good. Form what I hear from others that's normal.

i really dont like that kind of thinking of selling it, never had that problem with any of my other semi autos.

It is correct. The top round in the full mag does not have very much give, so when it contacts the pick up rail on the center of the underside of the slide, there is just not much room. You can insert slowly without slamming and get it to lock, but it takes some strength. If this bothers you, try loading the magazine one round down. I would rather have easy insertion if the slide is closed that try to always count on the idea that I will always have a slide locked to the rear when reloading.

Glocks are exactly the same way.

You will find with both S&W and Glock, not to mention most other high capacity magazine pistols, that leaving a fully loaded magazine inserted into the gun will cause the problem to diminish in fairly short order.

thats weird i have never noticed this with my glocks, i will remove one rd from the mag and give it a try. i have the CA 10rd mags not sure if that makes a difference.

I have noticed that over time it has gotten better as it's not as hard to set the mag in place. My sons mp 45 fs is the same way. It's really not an issue with me. Most of the time when I change mags I do it while the slide is in the open position

youre right D-HOP, most of the time the slide is open. just bugs me for the first mag and i looks for it now. i love the ergonomics of the gun, so i will keep it for a while longer. hopefully it gets easier with use.

New springs tend to do that. As you cycle your mags through use the springs will loosen up and they'll start to insert fully loaded with normal effort.

New mags will perform better for a first range day, if you fully load them a few days before.

Pretty much all of my M&P, 1911, and most Glock mags did the same thing initially but all loosened up.

Be safe.

My SD9VE, M&P 9 & 45 and Ruger SR1911 are that way. They will get easier. Only time I notice is when I chamber a round and then top off the mag.

Welcome from Texas! Just use a forceful push till things loosen up. Have fun and be safe.
