Problems with model 617

Hey guys, wondering if anyone has had these problems with NEW S&W model 617-... Failure to fire (click no bang), bullet fragments ejecting out the sides of the gun, heavy leading every 20 shots. Besides that lets hear some feedback on their repair department. I sent this gun in with these problems and received the gun back with the cylinder spinning freely within the frame. Has anyone else received a dangerous, inoperable gun from the repair dept. Let me know what you think. I would like to hear of a class action suit.

Also looking for resources to help me with an unsupportive customer service dept. Right now I have the mass attorney general's office, US consumer product safety division, Local volunteer law firm

I bet this is the only time a gun owner has been happy the attorney General is anti-gun... They seem really excited to nail this one... I just don't want to wait yrs to be compensated for my gun if it's used as evidence. Any idea how this might play out? Any advice is helpful thanks

Sorry about your problem but your first post on a S&W forum is asking us to join you in a lawsuit against S&W? Really? You might find a more sympathetic ear with one of the NRA hating organizations. Most problems can usually be resolved without involving an attorney.

I've been dealing with this since april... I don't have enough time to tell you how bad this is.... You should know I'm from Springfield,MA so I've heard about it for years, I know many S&W employees and see more smiths at the range than any other brand... S&W has been financialized and the ppl running the company are preying upon the brand's loyal followers. The fat cats know they are pushing defective dangerous guns, and they know the brand will be put out of business by doing so, but the numbers are worth it... If you don't stand up and hold S&W accountable, that brand and possibly USA manufacturing will fall victim to a couple evil greedy ppl... You should know it was a couple S&W employees that encourages me to go this route. I know the lawyers or authorities or courts are the real winners in situations like this but it might do something, and I'm not a sucker, if I get ripped off or deceived In gonna take action

in MASS it's hard enough to do everything right without having to worry about being taken advantage of by a giant corporation. I believe in USA manufacturing and the fat cats that bought S&W are counting on that to make extreme profits quickly, at my expense. My brand new USA made revolver "could" have hurt somebody standing behind me, and I "might" have had to dig a piece of jacket out of his face, and I "might" have had to convince him not to go to the hospital, and I "might" have trouble sleeping now... Can you understand why it "might" be infuriating to be in possession of a defective firearm?

I m somewhat mad at myself... For years I heard about temps working in QC\QA and final assembly, I've heard about the great thermal casting qualities and poor structural qualities of the metal used in MIM... I never believed it, I thought it was all exagerated... I know the ppl that see this every day and complain about it at S&W. The company doesn't listen to their own employees. One of the best things about the USA is that companies have to listen to the consumer or they go belly up. As an American consumer i now feel like it's my duty to speak up and put an end to this nonsense, it's bad for everyone except the 1%. Honestly though, I doubt this will do anything, I believe there are enough ignorant ppl for this business model to continue raping the 2a community. This country doesn't have enough ppl in manufacturing to come to the realization that they are buying junk. How can people understand what quality is if they've never been involved in manufacturing. If you put a big price tag on some shiny dog doo doo and there are a few ppl talking about how great that doo doo is there will be ppl that believe it

I'll tell you about myself so u don't get the wrong idea, been hunting and fishing since I was 7. Deep sea fishing fluke, scup and stripers, I hold an ice fishing record, my dad holds a record out of quabin, my best friend holds a white tail record. H s state champs in contact sports. Associates degree but I don't use it, I've been a steel worker since I graduated college i drive a pickup truck, don't drink or drug cause that is kid stuff, and the only thing I spend more money on than guns is tools, I have a shop in my garage

You should sell that junker for a loss and buy you a quality revolver.... maybe a Heritage Rough Rider.

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM OF SPITTING LEAD. I SENT IT IN, AND THEY FIXED IT---BUT, BECAUSE I HAD REPLACED THE IL WITH A PLUG, THEY SAID THAT I VOIDED THE WARRANTY. THEY CHARGED ME SHIPPING BOTH WAYS, AND PARTS AND LABOR FOR THE FIX---INCLUDING THE INSTALLATION OF ANOTHER IL.....

YOUR SITUATION OF SENDING IN A GUN FOR REPAIR, AND GETTING IT BACK IN THE SAME, OR EVEN WORSE CONDITION IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY COMMON. IT EVEN OCCURS WITH THE HIGHLY TOUTED AND VERY EXPENSIVE PC GUNS......

IT APPEARS THAT THERE IS A LACK OF PRIDE IN WORKMANSHIP AT S&W---AND A SHIFTING OF THE QC FUNCTION TO THE END USER OF THE FIREARM......

Rex, I've cleaned up and deleted some of your posts and suggest you take time to review the rules here, including ther part about political statements. I would also advise against making 5 posts that should be combined into 1.

There is nothing wrong with complaining about having a problem with a S&W product. There are people here who never seem get one with a problem while others seem to get nothing but problem guns. You can limit problems a LOT by inspecting a gun before purchasing it. If you aren't aware of what to look for, there's some good threads here on doing this process. Also, the gun comes with a lifetime guaranty against defects, which it appears your gun has. Make use of this - even if it means sending it back multiple times. Eventually it will get fixed.

As for a class action suit - good luck with that. Not that I think you have a case, because I don't, but the only people who make out on class action suits are lawyers.

When you go deep sea fishing do you prefer to Troll or drop anchor and bottom fish ? Personally I don't care for Trolling and prefer to bottom fish with live shrimp or cut bait .

I find being nice to others gets me more "fish" than being mean to them.

I’m a little confused here , did you call customer service when it came back screwed up ?Did you ask the dealer who sold it to you to send it in for you or what could be causing the problems. Needless to say in my experience customer service will send you free shipping labels for you to send it back in . Maybe you did this several times maybe not. Someone let a bad gun go out and sadly after repair whether a piece broke or came loose it got shipped again . Send it back and keep sending it till it gets fixed ! And I have a 351PD in for repair now that I bought used that someone screwed up and customer service knows was used and still sent a shipping label.

I am not sure if it is a troll nature or not,
But I will answer some of you're questions. I have a 617 that was less than a year old or right at a year old when I bought it used. Call S&W because it was leading up terribly and spitting lead out the side. They sent me a RAM label and they had the gun for 2 weeks. Before I got it back to my front door.

They reamed the forcing cone and put a shorter rear sight on for me because I could not get it to shoot to point of aim at 25 yards. All was done free of charge. Gun shoots great now and I am very happy with it.

It might have been better if you would have worked ( I do not know the whole situation) with S&W even if having to send it back a second time. I know that they would try to do the correct thing. I am very happy with their service. I just sent a Henry back for a new barrel under warranty. They had the rifle 26 days before I received it back. I sent a Ruger Single Six Hunter in for a slopping rear sight, it was back in two weeks all fixed up. So comparing S&W to the others they are even with Ruger on time and far better than Henry was. Probably should have given them a fighting chance. Did you have words with them right away ? Either way, that is my story. I Love my 617-6 what a Beauty.

One thing that seems to attract trolls to the Internet is that they can be whatever they want to be because of the anonymous nature of the 'net. I simply choose not to feed them.

Ever heard the phrase " You'll catch more flies with honey than you will with vinegar " ? If you call customer service of ANY company ranting and raving more than likely they will not be very cooperative. And if they sent it back wrong,call,talk to them NICELY and send it back again. They will fix the gun if you are decent with them. They have gone out of their way REPEATEDLY for many customers to keep them happy when the gun wasn't even with the original owner or had gone out of warranty.

The forcing cone was cut, hand replaced, crane replaced, a few other timing issue fixes... My main concern is the gun is likely to inflict serious injury to the user or bystanders. I bought the gun new because I expect a USA made gun to function properly, and their customer service was once the best in the industry. Service is a hassle and cutting the forcing cone degraded performance... Being from MASS if someone gets hurt with MY gun i get screwed, that's why I buy NEW only.... The way I see it: You're a sucker if you accept anything less than advertised and MADE IN USA means BEST OF THE BEST, and it's the consumer's duty to insure that... never again will i buy smith

Brand new gun should function properly 1at time and every time for at least 1000 rounds

617 models need a little break in period before they " wear in". I think it's the indexing grooves on the outside of the cylinder, the sharp edges need to round off a little. I almost sent mine back when I first got it due to failure to lock up on a couple places , and spitting lead at those times, but after 2-3 hundred rounds everything is working flawlessly and wouldn't give that gun up for nothing.

Sometimes, instead of freaking out , you got to stop your head from spinning and examine the problem. There is a lot of machining going on in the 617, and I am glad that S&w has decided to let them wear in, rather than build a sloppy gun.

Being from Springfield Mass. you shouldn't have had to far to "send it in". One might think a face to face could be arranged to demonstrate how this is a "dangerous" revolver. Sure would be simpler than a law suit .

I have two 617s, a 6" purchased about 10 years ago, and a 4" about 5. Both were new, have the IL, 10-shot versions. Both have been excellent and problem-free, provided I clean them periodically. 22s do get dirty and gritty.
