Problems with my 645 - Slide staying open after most shots =PROBLEM SOLVED!

HA! You caught me.

I seem to recall asking a lot of questions in that early 3rd gen pistols armorer class, coaxing some further details out of the instructor (who was a former long time revolver production guy, and had an appreciation for correctly done subtle adjustments).

Of course, it didn't hurt to have the head armorer back home also be a long time Colt armorer (revolvers & 1911's), who had been lucky enough to have been around to have picked up some tricks for 1911's from Bob Chow in earlier days. He really fine tuning whatever skills I started bringing back from various armorer classes for some years.

He showed me how to adjust the slide stop tabs, while the S&W armorer instructor was primarily involved in talking about adjustment of the assembly's angle. I do, however, seem to recall him also offering some tab stoning details during a break in the class. (Kind of like how some unofficial info & demonstration of stoning hammers for smoother DA strokes was discussed during lunch & other breaks, because it wasn't something taught to pistol armorers as a normal armorer function during the actual class.;) )

I hear you, it's just frustrating to wait as long as I did and have it come back with the extractor fixed and the slide stop messed up! Your points on the ejector fitting and tension gauge is exactly why I sent it to them and didn't try messing with it myself. The gun is a great shooter, and I'm glad to have it working right again. Thanks to all who contributed!

For future readers, this may help: One of the things I learned here (late but I learned!) was to check the clearance of the slide stop to the frame. I would have seen the slide stop was partially bent, that is the clearance near the side plate was less than where the slide stop pin goes through the barrel and frame. It was tweaked enough to push the slide stop in far enough to catch bullet heads coming up the mag as if they were a follower at the end of the mag. Stoning the slide stop fixed the clearance issue, but attempting to bend it to increase the clearance between the slide stop and the frame would have accomplished the same. Reading these posts it sounds harder to do than it seems, the part is small and 'whacking it" with a lead hammer sounds like less science and more luck as to the results! So for me, stoning it was a good option, and, it worked great. Take small amounts off if you choose this route, check for clearance. Go slow, keep your angles, and it will work!
