project idea model 45

I've lusted after a model 45 for a while now but haven't cracked open the wallet and bought one.

It recently occurred to me that a facsimile could be made using a model 10 (one of the recent production ones that has the firing pin in frame), sleeving the bbl, and using a K22 cylinder.

I looked at a 64 I have that's the 'new' style and it seems possible to push out the current firing pin, make one that's about .1" offset, make a new washer/insert that hold's the pin in place to make the rimfire strike possible. Might have to enlarge the hole in the frame a touch to get enough offset.

The correct cartridge could be engraved on the bbl of course.

What model designation did S&W give to the blued model 10s that have the internal firing pin?

I'm interested in getting the thoughts of the experts here.

But I was thinking of using an old style frame made for a hammer with the firing pin. This way, you only have one pin that holds the firing pin in. Of course this will require a new rimfire hammer.

Don't know how Andy Horvath is doing it but I'm having a model 17 basically made into a model 16 32 long. Gave him a centerfire hammer, not sure how he does the rest. Go for it, sounds like a cool project. Make sure we get pics when done, Larry

That's what S&W should be making a Classic out of!

That firing pin looks good.

I have been looking for a cylinder. It seems that a stainless 10 shot is what is available.

I may become the ultimate bubba and make a stainless model 45 (Heavy Barrel?).
