Promag issues?

So I'm new to the m&p line and pretty new to owning pistols in general. I recently picked up an m&p9c and have been looking for full size mags since. The other day I saw some for sale and jumped on ordering 2, after doing a little research I found out about aftermarket mags and that the ones I ordered were made by promag. After doing a bit more research I keep reading people saying promag is pretty much a paperweight but can't find anyone posting problems with any 9mm mags.

Has anyone had bad experiences with their 9mm mags? Or do people just like to jump on the down with aftermarket bandwagon? Just wondering what I'm in for when they get here, and if they have to many issues for a home defense mag. Thanks for any feedback

I just ordered 2 myself. I've used Promag mags for other firearms w/o any issues. So I didn't hesitate to try out the new 9mm mags for the M&P.

I think Promag sometimes gets a bad rap. They're decent magazines and have a lifetime warranty. If they don't work to your satisfaction, just return them and they will replace or repair at no cost. I use them in my S&W 908 and they work just fine.

These are so new for the M&Ps we haven't gotten enough data to decide how these particular models should be rated.

Yes, the baseplates may be a little different. So what? If there turns out to be a reliability issue, relegate them to use for range practice rather than duty, defense, or competition. The BIG issue at the moment is availability.

I just threw one for my Sig 226 away. Bought the pistol with 3 15 round mags 2 promags and a Sig mag. Placed side by side the promags are obviously of inferior quality. Thinner and flimsier metal in the mag body and much softer springs. One of the promags works fine other than being a very loose fit and sticking down about 1/16" below the frame when inserted but the other would miss feed even standard factory 115gr FMJ ammo. Feed lips could be bent slightly to correct the problem but would spring back out after a magazine or 2 had been fired through it. Pitched it in the trash and bought 3 GOOD Sig mags. When the last 2 get here the remaining promag will follow it's brother to the dump.

With Mec-Gar discontinuing 15 round mags for my CZ 75b, I was forced to resort to the only manufacturer who still offers them..Promag.
I picked up 4 for the very reasonable price of $14.99 each plus shipping.
Everything I've read on several forums cautions against putting too much trust in Promags and even after running some very dirty reloads through all of mine without any issues I still have a healthy distrust. Only 3 of the 4 will accept 15 rounds and the ones that do rattle annoyingly so now they are only 14 rounders,the steel used is thinner than the Mec-Gars and perhaps I'm transferring but they just feel cheaper....which they are.
In essence I use them for the range and trust the OE mags with my safety.

If they're dirt cheap,will only be used for range mags and are available when factory mags are not, they're worth a shot. If they cost as much as factory mags then I'd rather wait for a couple of factory mags to show up or a back order to be filled.

If MecGar would focus on the 17rd 9mm mags, the current $27 Promags wouldn't even be considered.

You need to test the individual magazines. Regardless of manufacturer, there are always some percentage that are duds. That may occur with somewhat greater frequency with after market mags than those from the pistol's manufacturer.

Don't assume the magazines from the firearms manufacturer will work properly: they often don't. Often, aftermarket mags work fine. Sometimes they don't. Larger capacity mags are more likely to have problems.

You must test each magazine. Preferably with multiple loadings.

I wouldn't use a Pro-Mag pistol in a water gun. Every mag of theirs I ever tried either created jams or had short lives. Pass, I'll spend another 1/3 and buy a working mag. JMO.

I have had some success with Pro-Mag rifle mags.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone pretty much what I expected, just gonna give them a shot. Since the baseplates are different does anyone know if the x-grip will work with the promags? I've also got an x grip on order just wondering if there is some other that I should have ordered

The X-Grip works just fine with the Pro-Mags. Not a snug fit over the mag but once the mag is inserted in the mag well the X-Grip does its job. My 17 round Pro-Mag is not as nice as the OEM mags but it does work. The question that is most relevant about the Pro-Mags is if they can be expected to have the same longevity as the OEM mags.

Folks over on the Bersa sight bad mouth ProMags. However, I have two for my Bersa Thunder .380 and both have performed perfectly. I do use them for practice, but performance wise, I can't tell the difference from the factory mags.

My experience with ProMag is that they run fine in a single stack, but seem problematic in the double stacks....go figure.

But do they come in a 15 round version?. I like all my mags loaded to minimize very expensive and hard to come by range time in New Jersey. I now carry 8 mags to the range but would like to supplement those with another 4 that I can trust.
