Promag Review

I liked the P22 scope. I liked the external adjusting turrets. The gun was sighted in quickly. What I did not like was the price.$179.:( Although the scope is a 2x7, it was adequate for the range I was shooting at. I also have the Nikon Prostaff rimfire scope on the other two 1522s. I like them because of the 3x9x40.:) Athough you have to take the caps off to adjust it, I found that to be a non issue. The prostaff is also 1 inch longer. Both scopes have the same length from the eye up to the turret, but the rimfire is 1 inch longer at the belled end. Both scopes also have the BDC reticles as well. I hope this review helps.:)

I'm new to the forum but have been reading for a couple of weeks. I received 2 promag 32 round magazines last week and over the weeked ran 50 rounds through 1 of them (25 at a time) with no problems at all.

How long did you wait after ordering?

Here is my review for the new members.

The only negative thing I noticed was the mag button was loose and made out of plastic. It might need replaced during long term use.

...vs...

This mag is very well made and it was tight in the gun. It did not shake, rattle, roll or move in any way.

Sorry, I'm confused between these two quotes. You said the mag button was loose but the mag didn't move in any way. Did the magazine cause the mag release button on the rifle to be loose?

Also, do these magazines keep the bolt open after the last shot?

Thanks.

I just used my promags last week for the first time and they performed flawlessly. I now have 2 promags and 2 stock 25 rounders. Super impressed with them considering you can get 2 promags to 1 stock mag cost wise. If you can even find a stock mag. Would buy more if I needed them. And I'm super picky about my accessories so for me to give them a gold star is big.

Question for Don 5

I enjoyed your review although I have a question about yours scopes. I have never bought one before and I need one for my 15-22 that would also work for a .223 when I get one someday. I just want to keep it under $200 so that P22 sounds good. Would you recommend it or the other one that is an inch longer? Is longer better? Thanks.

I have been using the 2 Promag 32s I bought in competition since late 2012 with no issues. Now I have a mag that allows me to shoot all 5 runs in a Steel Challenge stage without a reload. Nice job Promag.

I have four pro-mags and I say the same exact thing. I use all four and then either reload them or use my factory 25 rounders for the last couple of stages. I say they work as well as the factory mags.

He was referring to the loading assist button, not the rifle's mag release.

Yes, the mags hold the bolt open; if not, one needs to do the bolt latch spring mod. It's not the mag's fault.

Thanks Major for clearing that up. The load assist button has some play in it. The button is made out of plastic. I could see after some long term use that you might want to replace it. It is not that big of a deal. The magazine itself fits solid in the mag well of the gun. It does not shake, wobble or move in any way. The mag is built really well. I hope this clears up any questions.

Both scopes, P22 and prostaff rimfire are rated for rimfire rifles. However the P223 is rated for the AR platform I have a couple of these scopes as well. I really like them. Walmart sells them for $149. They have a BDC reticle which is actually a couple of horizontal lines. It is rated out to 600 yards whereas the rimfire scopes are rated out to 150. I suppose you could try one on an AR,but I am not sure of the results.

Ah, that button. Thanks for clearing that up.

Warning: Newbie questions to follow as I think this through. ;)

If the top of the magazine is the same as the factory magazine, why would the spring in the rifle need to be modified?

Unless it's because the spring in the magazine is longer than the original and doesn't push the follower up with much force by the time the last round is fired. If that's the case, wouldn't the source of that fault be with the magazine?

And, if that is the case, wouldn't increasing spring tension, such as adding a shim or the like, to the bottom of the spring in the magazine result in the same fix?

Or, if one was to sufficiently increase the spring tension in the magazine, it would also severely reduce the magazine capacity. In which case, it's better to decrease the spring tension in the rifle's bolt latch, then to increase the spring tension in the magazine.

However, if that was true, that would still make it the magazine's fault for not having a supplied spring with enough tension.

I'm confused.

I agree, it's not. Metal replacements are available. I still like the aluminum idea from the other thread as to not get all weighty.

I hope this clears up any questions.
Yes, it does. Thank you.

The lock back problem is a well documented problem and exists, to one extent or another, with every brand of magazine, including S&W mags. There's several threads on the subject in the forum. Likewise, the solution is well documented in the same threads.

It is a primarily a too strong spring in the bolt latch and clipping two turns off the spring solves the problem once an for all.

Reading through the forum can be very educational for new 15-22 owners. :)
