Prop Question

Like many others, I enjoy taking photos of my SW's. But I don't like having to prop them up with a ball point or such through the trigger guard. I've noticed a number of photos here with a blue rod with the SW logo and "Smith & Wesson" imprinted on the end. Where do you find such a thing?

Ed, call the factory, they MAY have them. Sometimes they're listed in the classifieds.

S&W prop rods

....they show up on the forum for sale sometimes,(I got my two on here),But man-O man.....$20 for a cheap one to $30 each!!!! They sure are nice though.

Shoo-boy offers prop rods, they are nice but do not look like the S&W's.

I prefer to put something behind the handgun that is not visible in the photo.

If you do a search in the Classified Accessories section for Shooboy, you should find an ad for his Shoo-rod. Looks a like a fine piece for propping guns, not just for pics but good for the gun cabinet too.

Might be able to find some of the S&W ones on Gunbroker too.

I never use a prop. My preferred method is to have the camera on a tripod, slanted down at a steep angle. Place the gun on a pillow (or similar) in an upside down position - i.e., with the sights down low and the butt farther away from the camera and angling up to a higher level than the sights. After taking the picture just flip the resulting image upside down to see the gun in a normal "sights upward" position. Hope my description makes sense.

I don't advise taking pics of smith revolvers without a Smith prop rod. And all my prop rods have been lettered.

I ordered one a couple of years ago from the Smith & Wesson factory site. Expensive, but certainly "class" for pictures. I've only used one on this board once, and didn't show the S&W monogram. Click on "Community," "Pictures and Albums," "For Emergency Use Only!" and the seventh picture. It kept a cylinder-open Model 66 propped up to show the recessed chambers.

As a sub for the real McCoy, next time you are at a gun show, pick up a few rounds of 50 BMG ammo.

They work for props, looks nice in the pic, & you will have an excuse for buying the gun to go with!

Smith no longer sells them to the public. Ask your local dealer. They are still supplied free to dealers. My dealer always brings back a 5 gallon bucket full of them allong with 20 S&W mats from the Shot Show.

I use a small cork or rubber stopper behind the gun and position it so it's not visible in the picture.
