Proper grip question

Ok, All the revolvers that I have shot usually have pachmayr rubber grips on them, except my Ruger SP101 it has that stock rubber with wood inserts.

Well I got the Altamonts that I mentioned in another post and it seems uncomfortable to try and get high on the backstrap like I do with the smaller Pachmayers. Is this normal? It feels ok with my hand lower on the grip, but I have always been taught to get high on the backstrap.

Your question all revolves on the answer/value you give to the term "proper".

Grips are like shoes, you can't tell another man how his fit.

I too favor a high hand hold and imho, a LOT of the methods being taught now days about shooting revolvers are taught by folks who have MUCH more experience with semi's. Have even seen some goofs, in classes that folks were paying for, advocating reloads while keeping the firing hand on the grip and attempting to load with the off hand. Dumb imo, and you'll know it's dumb if you ever have anyone show you how to properly load one with speedloaders/strips at speed. But I digress into rant.

To answer your question, what lots of folks do is experiment until they get the grip they like for their particular hand/model/shooting style. Then they sell the left overs here on the Classifieds. You see this often. This also assumes that you're not attempting to keep the gun 100% original (at least not for carry/range use). If I get your situation right, what you should be looking for is open backed grips that either have low "horns" or thin horns. Do a search on several of the forums here with the word "grips" or "custom grips" and you'll get LOTS of ideas and the names of various makers (several of whom may be forum members).

Hope this helps and stay with it. You'll get a pair you'll like and then you'll be REALLY hooked.

I am already hooked. I have been a firearms instructor for my dept. for about 10 years. However, our model 10's and 64's all have the pachmayer decelerator grips on them. I just wanted something a little nicer on my personal gun (686) and my dad offered to buy them for me for my birthday. I hate to do it, but I might end up selling them and getting something else.

What did you mean by horns? Like I said I am new to wood grips.

I agree with the reload comments. I favor switching hands with my two middle fingers through the frame to hold the cylinder open, using my thumb to eject the spent cartridges, and using my shooting hand to load. For me it gives better control and is faster.
