Proprietary Bolt group/carrier, barrel nut, and barrel? A deal breaker?

The more I read the more I find out the M&P 10 has a proprietary bolt/carrier group, barrel nut, and now I'm finding out the barrel is also proprietary. I was hoping to buy something that would be more DPMS compatible for availability of spare parts. ie, bolt, firing pin, carrier group, barrels, etc. I'm finding this isn't the case. Is this a deal breaker in your opinion?

I've got a deposit down on a M&P 10 right now and am starting to second guess myself. Any input is appreciated. c good

if you are going as far as changing the barrel when customizing the rifle why not just build one from scratch? the m&p 10 is a rather large chunk of change, once you spend a couple hundred on a barrel and a couple hundred on a free float tube, a couple hundred on a trigger wouldn't you be better off just buying one with specs you like from the start?

If u want a bull barrel style contact s&w they have one u can buy. Just my 2 cents, I don't get what is wrong with this barrel. It's not match grade for 1000 yard competitions but its also not a bench rifle. If that's what ur looking for, unless ou have lots $$$$, go bolt action. 1000 capable? Yes. Competition capable at 1000, not unless you have serious money to put into it.

While u didn't specify what kind of exact barrel ur looking for, just guessing that's where you were going w this.

Thanks for the input so far all. I'm very happy with the barrel configuration that is currently on the rifle. I'm just thinking down the road when things start to break and wear out. Seems like S&W has a captive audience with all the proprietary parts of the rifle.

I'm just a weekend shooter. Paper targets, reactive targets, etc. Max distance out to 400 yards. Not into the competitive shooting side of the sport, just for fun. Would love to shoot competitively but just don't have the time. Maybe when I finally retire I'll take it to the next level. Thanks again for the input. Keep it coming. c good

It doesn't sound like you will ever wear out much of anything on the rifle in your lifetime. So why worry about it?

I am not an operator, this is is not a battle rifle for me.
This is my primary hunting rifle... In a TEOTWAWKI situation I take a line from "We were Soldiers":

Sergeant Major Basil Plumley: Sir, if the time comes I need one, there'll be plenty lying on the ground.

I got into the AR platform to learn it for "when that time comes"

I had a couple of AKs, now I have an AR15 and now an AR on steroids. (M&P10)

If I break it today... I'll repair it
If I break it in those days, I'll drop it

Initially I was concerned about the major bits being proprietary. After thinking about it I decided it wasn't an issue for several reasons.

I like 18" barrels. The one on our M&P 10 shoots pretty darn good so I'm in no hurry to change it.

The gun can be personalized with custom handguards, rails, buttstocks, sights, triggers, etc.

S&W has one of the best customer service reputations in the industry. I'm fairly confident if something breaks on my gun, S&W will fix it.

One last thought. The FN SCAR 17 and Colt LE-901 are both highly coveted and pricey rifles. They're also highly proprietary which doesn't seem to bother the owners of those guns.
