Has anyone ever had a problem with firing pin puncturing the primers on S&W 500 ? was shooting reloads with Winchester primers.

Not yet but I have had three WLR Primers not ignite after being struck in the 500 SW Magnum.

I have seen several articles about the variation in S&W brass. Case wall thickness, interior dimensions, even case head thickness. It bears special consideration and load development starting below minimum loads to develop accurate loads, and for your benefit keep with the same brand of brass. I recommend t run a primer pocket uniforming cutter in every primer pocket, as well as deburring the inside flash hole, and trimming to a consistent length.

Which Winchester primers?
You should be using Rifle primers- WLR

If not pistol primers are not rated for 500 S&W pressure.

Check your firing pin it should be round on the end. Punctured primer tend to ruin firing pins as will as erode/cut the firing pin bushing which can lead to other issues.

S&W never made any brass for 500 S&W

Are they firing when struck the second time? If yes than they were not seated. Most common problem with fail to fire in 460 and 500.

As an aside to my previous post.

Can we say you have not put an extended length firing pin in place of the stock firing pin?

Extended firing pins should only be used when the stock pins retain pin hole was not place properly and you can not meet pin extension spec. If used because light springs, loosed/shortened strain screws, or other attempts to lighten your trigger pull you can expect some punctured primers and their associated issues.

Punctured Primers

Gun was purchased new from dealer a few years back.
I have never made any modification to it. I have never had a round misfire, only puncture the primer and not allow the cylinder to turn for the next round because of the firing pin being stuck in the primer. I will inspect the FP closer to make sure it is not chipped or broken.
Thank you for your replies..

I can't believe no one has suggested that the reloads had primers that were "proud" i.e., not fully seated in the primer pocket. That and a pistol primer not WLR and to make sure, you do not need a magnum rifle primer. Don

Edited to add that I've been shooting 500s since 2003, nothing but reloads and I've never had an issue with primer ignition, pierced primers or stuck cases.

When people have problems with the X frames, it's most commonly the user's issue. Don
