I have been trying to sell a S&W 617. I had a buyer who wanted to shoot it first, at the range when me or the buyer who was also a strong adult shot it in both single and double action the gun worked just fine. When his daughter shot it in single action issues started to come up. The trigger would spring forward on release of the hammer and push her finger out of the all the pulled position causing the gun to not fire. I could get this to happen only if I completely relaxed my finger. The buyer demonstraited the the gun has a second issue called push off. He also mentioned the screws on the gun indicate that bubba may have taken off the side plate.

So he didn't want the gun. I did some checking on here, found the right way to remove the side plate and found a few areas of concern.

You can see here it looks like a stainless steel chewing rat go ahold of this gun. I am not sure if the marks on the side plate are normal or if it was used as a snowboard or something.

You can see the pry mark on the frame and an area on the hammer where it looks like a dremel misfired, or are such marks common on S&W hammers? (insert sarcastic tone for last comment, the funny kind of sarcasm, not the annoying kind)

What is the best course of action to get the gun fixed? I am going to contact S&W tomorrow but I am expecting to take the cost of the repair as this would be what anyone would call abuse. Would a gunsmith be cheaper than what S&W would charge?

Fix it with a stone. If you fail, then send it back.

You stone the trigger to fix push off. It needs to be completely taken apart to get the trigger out of the gun. Once the parts are out, take a stone and clean up all the screw driver dig marks.

Your bubba friend needs a lesson on repairing fine revolvers!

See the faq sticky above to learn about repairing the gun, and taking it apart.

I don't see anything that is really detrimental to the performance of the pistol. The marks on the side plate are most certainly from incorrect prying to get the side plate out of the frame. The marks on the inner frame along side the recoil block are also from incorrectly using a sharp instrument to get the block started up and out. Both sets of marks could be polished out if they really bother you. What does bother me is if someone was that ham-handed, what else did they screw up? I would take the handgun totally apart and examine everything; put it back together and perform every function check multiple times before my mind was at rest. .......... Big Cholla

I need to add; the pushoff must be fixed. There are multiple possible causes.

Aside from the push off the gun runs like a top. I hate people feeling like I wronged them so I will not polish out the damaged areas and will provide these pictures as a guide so people will know what they are buying. I am going to clean up the exterior. As much as possible.

So was the trigger rounded by an improper trigger job or the large amount of firing this gun has done with me in the last 6 years?

Well, fxing the push off fixed the other problem. It took me 3 hours with a white stone to get the push off to go away. The trigger problem is also gone.

Thanks to everyone for the speedy help!
