Well i am getting my first S&W revolver (I am the proud owner of a 5906 and SD9). I am a die hard Ruger Revolver Guy (please don't hate me) but I am "needing" and DA 22lr and after going back and forth on a Ruger SP101 and the 617, I went with the Smith. I am super excited, but scared what it might lead to:)

more time outside, less couch time? I'd be scared too :). Enjoy, I'm sure she will shoot like a dream

I too started with Rugers and now have a couple Smiths also. I'd love to get a K-22 Outdoorsman or a 617. What led to your choice?

Please post pics when you can. CB

You made an excellent choice. I went with the SP101 for cost/availability reasons and am happy with it.

The 617 was my first choice and I would have bought it if not for the above reasons.

I recently picked up a 3" GP100, pretty cool / well made firearm.. But, My first love has always been S&W revolvers.

One of them is a 4" 617 10 shot,, it's smooth , fast and fun..
Get some DS-10 speed loaders ( if it's a 10 shooter) so you can feed it faster. great gun,, have fun..

You will enjoy it more than you think. I got my new 617 6"bbl 10 shot yesterday. It replaces the one I, STUPIDLY, traded away, 3 yrs ago. It was a 617 6 shot. I shoot calibri's in the garage when I can't get out to the range. I still shoot my MKIII, but the 617 is more fun.
Congratulations on a fine choice of weapon.

Ruger revolvers are fantastic guns overall. But I think you made the right decision. I'm not a fan of the sp101 trigger.

I recently acquired the 617 10-shot, my first Smith, and love it. As someone commented on my "bragging" thread, it shoots like a rifle and is built like a brick you-know-what. Here's pic.

Well I picked the 617 mainly because of the trigger, weight, and reputation. I wanted a quality 22 and the $175 difference between the sp101 and 617 doesn't really seem like a big deal when you consider it is a gun that you will shoot for the rest of your life.

I like heavy revolvers (I think that is why Rugers have appealed to me). Holding the 617, it just felt like a gun I would enjoy shooting

Wow; I'm really wanting a 617 4" for me plus my two sons will be able to learn on it. Beautiful revolver it is.

I had a Colt .22 Diamondback for years that i sold in 1999. Big mistake. I just found a good used Mod 17 with a 4" barrel. A bit of work, some new grips, and it is quickly becoming my favorite gun. In Australia where any cartridge larger than .22 will cost a fortune or have you reloading all night, the 17 is a gas. Also parts are still no problem to find and most are interchangeable with K,L & N frames.
BE CAREFUL NOT TO DRYFIRE IT!!! you will splinter the firing pin and peen the cylinder as it is a rimfire!
IS it new or used? If used, look at the firing pin for proper domed round end- check that the extractor ratchet locater pins are both there (they do like to fall out) and check the hammer in single action cock for push off.

Otherwise, ENJOY! you'll love it and can shoot all day for a few bucks w/o picking up brass.

Dryfiring was actually a question I was going to ask. I know with my ruger rimfires (single six and lcr) dryfiring is ok. I am glad you mentioned it

A long time ago in a land far, far away, well not so far but still a long time ago, I lusted for an S@W K-22, which at that time ( 1970's ) was a rare item to find. I settled for a Colt " Diamond Back" which I shot until it started spitting lead and as it didn't impress me, accuracy wise, I sold it. Finally one LGS got a couple in and one was mine, and still is, and after a few more I got a 610 with a 6" bbl then one in 4". A long story short the only one left was the original K-22 until recently a 4", 10 shot 617 showed up at lgs and ended up mine. My guess is that they are very addictive but I'm enjoying the addiction. Enjoy yours and as for dry firing, I picked up a 50 ct. package of small tan plastic wall anchors at Walmart ( dont remember the number) and they work great as snap caps, and they only cost $2 for fifty. Again, enjoy the 617 its a great gun.........Dan
