Putting a scope on a 629

My 629 has the 8 3/8" barrel precut for scope mounts. The problem is I can seem to find 1" mounts that fit this gun. Does anyone have a make & model # of a mount that would work? The scope is a Simmons 4x32. Thanks, Cherokee Slim

I've added a picture to show what I mean by "precut". I've never seen one before and locals like Sportsman's Depot don't seem to have a match. Maybe I'm lookin' at it wrong somehow.

Mounts or 1" scope rings? About any large gun shop would have at least the Weaver base for the gun, and a 1" mount is just a 1" mount for a 1" tube scope. If you order them from Optics Planet the base was less then $10 last year. I am still not sure I will ever use the base, every time I put the base on and mount optics I just don't like the look or the feel on my 6.5" 610 for some reason.

However my Dan Wesson with 8" barrel looks odd w/o the scope on it, I guess it's something in the water here.

I believe Weigand makes the base bar that attaches to the gun top strap and the rings usually come with the scope. My Ultra Dot is a 1" tube and it came with standard mount rings. If not, probably can buy rings.

BTW, Weigand used to make a mount called the "Integra Mount" for 1" scopes that was milled aluminum where the base and bottom half rings were all one piece of aluminum and the top half rings screwed down onto it. That thing is rock solid, I have one for my 686. Don't know if they still make it.

It looks to me like the barrel has been made to accept standard weaver rings, no mount needed, the grooves in barrel is your mount. Just find a set of standard steel two screw rings rather than the wide aluminum four screw Tactical rings and you should be good to go.

You may need taller Weaver-style rings to mount atop those cut-outs. I'd sure get steel, too.

Now, if your revolver is pre-drilled/tapped, you can always add a topstrap mounted scope base, like the Weigand (Weaver scope rings.) I use once a year or so on my 6" 629 (See below.):

To determine if your 629 is pre-drilled/tapped, release the cylinder and look at the underside of the topstrap - if all you see is one hole just behind the forcing cone, it's for the rear sight - and it was not pre-drilled. If there are two more holes spaced along the topstrap, it is pre-drilled/tapped - and scope mount ready - just remove the one rear sight screw up forward. Clean the holes - and screws - and use blue Loctite to secure the screws - and let them set for 12-24 hr.

That's a Weigand mount, Weaver rings, and Weaver H2 2 x 28mm scope - all in SS. It never stays that way long... I prefer iron sights.

What you have is one of 4810 guns(product code #103615) made in 1989 that came from the factory with scope rings to fit the custom broaching. The rings were supplied to S&W by Millet! All the guns that were made for these rings(29, 629,586,686)used blued rings. I believe these rings are no longer made!

It's not pre-drilled. I visited all the shops around Chattanooga today and didn't find anything that even comes close. The "standard" rings are way too wide. It would look better with the original rings so I guess I'll just hunt until I find them or maybe trade it for a 6". Thanks for the help.

Have you looked at Millett Angle-Loc Weaver-Style 1" Rings they are pretty narrow at the attachment point.


Edit: I searched and found a picture of a 629 with the same scope mount system as you have and in this pic he is using Millet rings. I can see from the photo how you had problems with other makers rings, even the narrow base of Millets takes up the whole flat area of the groove.

These were originally shipped with Millet Angle Lock Rings. Can get them just about any place that sells rings.
