I keep seeing mention that to put Pachmayr compact grips on a j frame. you need to remove the roll pin at the base of the grip frame. A: is this true? and B: if it is, why not just take a drill bit and make the hole on the grips deeper? Any ideas, help or suggestions welcome. Thanks

Say What?
If you want to try Pachs, just get some and put them on!
Here's a pair on my 640.

This gun was stolen (loooooooooooong story!) but it had two sets of Hogues, not Pacs, and I liked these!

I had Pachmayrs on other J frames back in the day - all liquidated now.

I get what the op is saying. I bought a pair and cannot get them on. But with the design I don't understand how you could drill out the holes without destroying the grips. I finally gave up.

Yup missed about 1/2 of the idea. thats what I get for posting late at night. SORRY and THANKS EVERYONE

I think you're talking about the Pachmayr Diamond Pro, not the Compacs. They need the pin removed because they are one-piece and slip on from the bottom... the pin would be in the way of that.

I put a set of compact on my 442. Didn't fit too well at first then realized that the pin was not centered in the grip frame. Light cap with hammer centered pin and grips fit perfect . Look great and make the little gun so much better to handle.

I'm posting these pics to show you the exact revolver you asked about.

I needed to do nothing to the gun or grips to put them on the M638. Of course they are not the Diamond Pro grips.

Thanks ARCHANGELCD that my new baby. I've been a fan of the Pachmayr compacts for years. Never had any trouble before but, this is my first S&W air weight. As a side note I got the gun used and it didn't come with a key. even though I never intend on using it the nice people at S&W are sending me a new key at no charge not even the price of a postage stamp. Even after I explained twice that I got the gun used, and ofered again to pay for it,still no charge. Thumbs up to S&W customer service.
