What QD scope mount for a Nikon 3-9x40 Prostaff will install without the need to remove the rear MagPul MBUS? Tnx

I'm not sure about a quick detachable mount but I have this one: M-223 Black - AR Mount - Accessories | Nikon Hunting with a Nikon P-22 scope. The MBUS sights will fit but you would need to move the rear sight one position forward.

It's a regular mount.

Do you have the gen1 or gen2 mbus? The gen2's have a lower profile.

What is the diameter of your scopes ocular bell?

I can take some mesurements to see if a Burris PEPR would work. I use a PA 1-4 scope with the 30mm QD PEPR and they clear my gen2 MBUS just fine. That's a lot of numbers and abbreviations.

The Burris PEPR is 1" from top of rail to centerline of scope. Deduct half the diameter of the eyepiece (or whatever part you're interested in) of the scope to see rail clearance. The MOE's sights are about 0.51" high folded.

I have a Burris PEPR QD on my S&W 15T with a Leupold 4-12x40 scope. It clears the gen2 MagPul sights on this rifle. SWFA had the mount for $90 plus shipping.

Math was never my best subject... It always helps me to start these math brain teasers backwards...

The PEPR provides 1in lift just like 1in tall scope rings.

The Nikon scope has a 1in tube.

This puts the scope centerline at 1.5'' above the rail

With a 1.5in centerline above the rail, we know that the max diameter can be 3in for zero clearance.

To get .51in clearance, we need to reduce the diameter by .51 x 2 = 1.02in.

Subtract 1.02in from 3in and we have 1.98in max diameter for .51 rail clearance. Now where did I screw up?

I don't know the eyepice diameter of your scope, but the nikon 3x9x40 here Nikon Prostaff Rimfire Rifle Scope 3-9x 40mm BDC 150 Reticle Matte shows to have an eyepiece 44mm in diameter = 1.73in. It will fit.... and probably a lens cap too.

I'm usin a LaRue Tactical QD with a Weaver SuperSlam scope and have it mounted just behind my BUIS. The SuperSlam works just fine.

Sorry, I mis-styped. It is 1" from the top of rail to the bottom of the scope, not the centerline. My bad.

Here's a PEPR QD with Nikon 3x9x40 slug scope on my .50 beowulf

Warne high rings barely clear this Leupold compact 2x7x32 over Troy sights. The Warne AR rings are taller.

I read this to ask what mount he can use that can be installed/removed whithout having to remove the MBUS to install it, rather than if it clears once installed. I was wondering the same myself, but have decided to use a riser with my P22 mounts, which slide onto the rail to install.

Pretty much the same answer, I would think. No reason it would have to clear if the sights are NOT folded down. And mounting the scope so far forward that it clears the sight is usually not best.

You can't use the irons through a magnified optic anyway, so the scope would have to come off.

The riser is necessary because it is my QD system. The Nikon mount slides onto the rail. With the riser I can keep my MBUS mounted at all times and remove scope to go iron. I would prefer not to have the riser but the P-series rings were free with the scope.

I prefer the big thumb screws over friction lever locks, but thats just me.

Not necessary, but maybe cheaper. The PEPR QD mount I use is 1" to the bottom of the scope. With a 1" tube and 1.73" eyepiece diameter per Nikon's site, that would mean the scope would be 0.63" above the rail or about 0.12" above the folded MBUS sight. The PEPR is expensive, though. A less expensive alternate is the NcStar MARCQ QD mount, which is 0.95" high to the bottom of a 30mm scope tube. Considering the 1" adapter bushings that come with it, that would result in very slightly more clearance, about 0.16".

When mounting a scope, I try to keep the centerline of the scope at a relative height to irons. Doing so maintains a consistent cheek weld.
