1. The SCSW leaves a big gap in the dates for your model 36.
1962 295000
1969 786544
You might be able to extrapolate your serial # being somewhere roughly about halfway between 1962 and 1969 and maybe logically narrow it down to closer to 1965-1966? Hopefully someone can come along to more accurately describe the date.
2. Diamond grips were discontinued in 1968 making me think your gun would more likely have diamond grips assuming my estimate of the date of your revolver is correct.
3. Value? At least $300, probably more like $400 - $500, possibly more depending on condition, originality, if it has box and documents.

The last 6 prices I have for this model since 12/1/2013 range from $400 to $565 averaging $491

The longer term track:

Smith & Wesson 36 1-7/8 in barrel Revolver in .38 Special. Blue Book of Gun Values (35th Edition) indicates between $465 in 95% condition and $650 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 69 recorded prices for this model gun from $250 to $600 over a period of 6 Yrs 9 Mos ending October 12, 2014. The average price as of that date was $405. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights. All represented as 95% or better. No distinction forengineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $822.

The very earliest model 60s (numbered in the same series as the model 36) were in the early 400,000 range in 1965. It would have had diamond Magna stocks as g8rb8 noted.

Bob, as always you are the man with price tracking :).
