Several years ago I bought a nice used 681 on Gun Broker. It
had a set of rubber grips on it. It did not have the modification, so I contacted S&W and they send me a
shipping label. So far, so good.
A week later I get a call from S&W about my 681. The guy
says there's a problem with my gun. It seems that there
were two different serial numbers on the gun; one in the
crane area, and the other on the butt. Whoever was applying
serial numbers that day in 1980 or so transposed the last
two numbers on one of the serial numbers. He tells me the
gun is illegal, and they will have to confiscate it. I was
bummed.
They ended up sending me a "new" S&W 686 with a 6 inch
barrel and rubber grips. The gun look very second hand at
best. I already have a Stainless Colt Python with a 6 inch
barrel, so I sold the replacement 686.
So, as stated in a previous post, if it it broke, don't fix it!
I had a rare, albeit illegal revolver go thru my hands.
