Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and handguns in general, but I am in the market to buy a Smith and Wesson revolver. I've come across a 1970's Model 36 that has never been fired and has the original box. The gun is owned by a friend of a friend and he is asking 450$. I know that this is a reasonable price, but I'm not sure how much a gun like this would be worth exactly. It is blued, with a 1.8 inch barrel. I want a gun that is easy to shoot, reliable, and accurate to be my first handgun. Would this be a good buy, or just a gun i could buy and resale to make a few dollars?

Welcome to the Forum. It sounds to be a nice gun that is at the upper end of current prices, even NIB. The price is fair, but in my opinion it would be difficult to sell and make money on it in the short term. If you are worried about using it and having it lose value, you can find a similar (lightly used) gun for less money. Hope this is helpful.

I would agree with Alan as far as the 36 you are looking at being at the upper end of current prices.
I have seen the type of revolver your friend has (J frame snubbys), with asking prices that range from $350 to $425 lately (depending on condition), and occasionally you can still find them for less if you are willing to take the time to attend shows and look for them. My most recent purchase was about one month ago where I found one on a dealer table (used), in very nice condition for $325 without a box.
Since you mention that you "want a gun that is easy to shoot, reliable, and accurate", I assume you are going to shoot whatever it is you end up with. One thing you want to consider is what you are going to use the revolver for. If you are looking for one to carry, then the 36 would be a fine option. On the other hand, if you are looking for one to target shoot and carry on occasion, then something with a longer barrel and perhaps adjustable sights might be in order.

Thanks guys. I really want a gun that is accurate and mostly for target shotting but occasional carry. I had looked at a model 64 previous to this, but after coming across this gun I wasn't sure if this would be a good purchase or not. How is the accuracy at say 25 yards with a model 36? I know they are intended for carry and therefore shorter range use.
