I have several 4" N Frame presentation cases for various guns. All have a blue interior with the gun pointing to the left except one. It is still pointing to the left but has a red interior and a larger clasp on the front of the wood case. It is original so my question is this.... Were these made during a specific time period or for certain guns or just luck of the draw? What are the differences, if any? Thanks.

I've never seen a red interior, original factory case.
jcelect has posted pics before with all the variations - maybe he'll chime in

It's the original plastic liner with that fuzzy material on it. Almost part of the plastic but certainly not an overlay or reflocking.

I could have been misinformed, but I was told that the red lined cases were for special guns, like engraved or maybe some gold inlay or something of that nature.

Obviously, with S&W I have learned never to say "never", but I believe the case you have was redone in red by someone outside of the factory. I have seen and owned cases from the 1950s through the 1980s (for plain and engraved Model 29s with and without gold inlay) and all were either lined with a blue type of cloth or covered with a blue flocking. I also believe the clasp on the front is a replacement for the original.

However, you still have a nice case that would display a Model 29 or Model 57 quite well.
