I came into the possession of a perfected model a while ago, good mech but bad barrel with a little star on the butt , was just wondering if any were built with a bicycle style barrel ,the barrel has the proper markings on both sides 38 s7w ctg on left side and smith&wesson on rt side with no info on top of strap and no pin holding in the ft blade sight. can it really be a perfected with a bicycle type barrel? any help would be good!

If the barrel is original to the gun, it will have the same serial number on it as the frame & cylinder. What's the serial number on the barrel? What is "bad" about the barrel? By "bicycle" do you mean it's a two inch barrel? (If so, it's either a substitute barrel from a Safety Hammerless or the original barrel has been cut.) Ed.

Gee... I couldn’t stand it!! You’ve been here 7 years, and no one ever “liked” you. There, I did it.

No, Ed said it best... they didn’t make (as far as I know) a short barreled Perfected. Barrel lengths wet 3 1/4”, 4”, 5”, and 6”.

Best Regards, Les

You should always find a rib stamping, or in the case of a 2" barrel, a side barrel stamping to show S&W address and patent dates. It is quite common to have the rib stamping removed after a barrel has been cut. It will usually show up as a partial address or smooth rib. The standard front sight was forged integral with the barrel, so no pin. Could there be a special order 2" Perfected out there, certainly, but it would still have the address and patent stampings on the right side.

Lastly, with some difficulty and a magnifying glass, you will find the barrel serial number on the top strap between the "ears" and latch on the rear side of the strap. Also, the latch should be serial numbered on the underside.

I suspect that a .38, Safety Hammerless, 5th Model barrel has been mated to a Perfected frame. As opoefc ask: " What's the serial number on the barrel?"

Post a few pictures for us. Our crystal ball has been out of service for awhile now. Include closeups of top strap and sides of barrel.

don't have modern electronics to post pics but will certainly look for serial # as directed, but I expect to find that it is as suspected just an old barrel substitute or a really nicely cut one, whatever whoever had it did a good job of shooting it to death. Thanks for all the friendly help!!! and yes it looks the same as the picture but with a 2inch+ barrel. thank you all!!
