are the lights that fit on pistol rails more or less a universal fit? I'm toying with the idea of getting a light for my SW40VE but don't want to spend a fortune. I've never had any gun-lights before and don't know much about them.

ok, I've partially answered my own questions...it would appear that there isn't much out there to fit a Sigma rail as-is, but there's a handy-dandy little picatinny rail adapter available for about $10 that makes life much easier.

So, that being said, finding one to fit shouldn't be a big deal. But...my next question is what's a decent light for maybe $100 or less?

I too am curious about this...I was looking to equip mine with a laser and light combo and was curious if anyone else has any suggestions on dual use.

My SW40VE came equipped with a laser sight from gander mtn. The pistol was $100 more with sight. I'm glad I choose to go with it.

Hey guys, Check out themachinistscrib.com they have the best fit and the expence is not bad either. I got mine in today and it fits great. I had posted a question in an earlier thread about slide movement in front and would that throw things off... well my answer has come and the answer is NO! The adapter is ok but this one is much better. For the price of the adapter then to get a light of good quality, you would have paid more than whet this one cost. Happy shooting and be safe.

outstanding! I don't think I'll be able to beat that.

I've looked at the machinist and I'm not totally sold on it...I'm still on the fence about getting a laser+light set up. Any feedback on this? Mostly am concerned with an encounter at night in my house with no lights on.

I would have to see the machinist light in action before i spent any money on it. My Insight M4 is rated at 90 lumens and personally i think its at the lower range of usefulness compared to my other tactical lights which are much brighter. I find it hard to believe that tiny light on the machinist setup is going to produce much more than a mini-mag light or similar sized torch.

I've acutally be tossing around the idea of just getting a length of 1913 rail and just drilling a couple of holes through the dust cover of my sigma and bolting the rail in place. I'm getting ready to do a simliar thing on one of my 1911's and if i can drill holes in a $800 gun, i might as well drill some in a $300 gun ... lol.

Wildcard what set up are your showing on your avatar?

I have an Insight M4. They are out of production now unfortunetly. The only downside is the use of incandescent bulbs in the M series lights. The bulbs are expensive and relatively fragile (or maybe i'm just spoiled by leds). That why i'm thinking about just bolting a 1913 rail to the dust cover and just using my TLR-1.

A quick search on GB shows a place selling TLR-1s for $91 delivered. The differences between these and the old incandescents are literally, night and day. A great deal of flashlight for the money.

On what would be my duty pistol if I could find a Safariland black basketweave RH 6280 holster:

At that price I wouldn't waste my (or your) money on anything else, IMHO of course.

Scotter,
Does using a light at night ever make you feel like you're giving your position away? Are their more advantages to disadvantages when using the light?

light

Anyone know anything about this set up? NcStar Pistol Mount Laser and LED Flashlight Kit ATPFLS FREE S&H ATPFLS. NcSTAR Laser Sights.
there is only one review on it and it wasnt good. Wasnt sure if this was typical of NcStar Products

I just got the NCstar light only, no laser, at a gun show this weekend to use on my M&P9. I have never used one before so it is a pretty inexpensive test to see if it works, and how the gun shoots with it. It is an LED and seems bright enough for the house. I have not had a chance to shoot it with it installed yet, but will let you know.

I've not had the need to use it very often. Our instructors have always advised to quickly illuminate to see what you need to see then move immediately from that location after deactivating the light so that you're not in the location you just gave away. They also have us light, get a quick sight picture and confirm your target then deactivate and fire, while moving although much quicker than I can describe it.

In my case I say more advantages because whoever may be where they're not supposed to be would already likely be aware of my presence so I don't feel using the light sporadically gives up much. I don't go strolling along with the light blazing away of course.

Perhaps some others with more current and intensive training can weigh in if I'm going against the grain of the consensus.
