Question about M 64-5

One of my very favorite and best shooters is a plain Jane M 64-5, cop trade in. It has the 4 inch heavy barrel.

Now, I'd like a M 64 snub nose or something like it.
Question is, what to look for and what to expect.

Thoughts and discussion are welcomed.

I have had just about each variation of the model 64 as it is one of my favorite models of revolver if not the most favorite for its value, variance and high quality. While the 2" model is great for carry purposes (but still heavy compared to it's j frame counterparts), I like the 3" version for the best all around of carry to shooting facets. I think the best overall is the 4" pencil barrel in terms of shoot-ability though. Key here is just keep shopping and get them all! Most can be had reasonably for $450 or less, the 3" are usually closer to $600+. Good luck in your search!

I used to have a 2" 64. I often preferred to carry it to the 3" 65 I had at the time. Mine was a factory DAO with bobbed hammer, former LE gun, I believe. Still miss that gun.

I don't think there's anything special to look for, just inspect it like you would any revolver before buying.

That 2" DAO is probably the bee's knees. I had a DAO 4" that had an amazing pull.

My 4" M64 DAO had the worst trigger pull ever ever ever. Since I love K frame snubs I bought a 2" barrel from a Forum member (it came from a blown up Model 12) and then had the gun customized by another Forum member. TheShootist1894 and he can still be found on this Forum.


After my fire last year the gun cleaned up and looked like this:

Before the fire the wood was lighter - and these stocks came with this M64!

I don't always carry it but, when I do, I feel very happy to have a 6 shot K frame with me instead of my 5 shot J frame. And the trigger is WAY WAY WAY better then it was before!

Yes, my 64 has a great trigger that stages automatically, then pulls through like a dream. And it's sights are regulated to my 158 gr. home cast reloads better than any.

2" K frames are hard to find. Sadly, after the fire last year I sold around a half dozen - totally good shooters but they were water stained and I couldn't bear to look at them.

You will pay a premium for a 2" K frame in excellent condition. My dealer tried to get premium prices for my stained ones but I stopped him; I said they are no longer worth that so we got shooter prices.

I am particularly proud of the customized M 64 above but I can say without reservation that this Model 10, which did NOT get stained, is a better gun. The DAO feature is cool but the trigger on this factory M 10 from around 1982 is beyond superb, the lock up is like a bank vault, and it is accurate at distances that snubs are not supposed to be accurate at.

My point being, if a 2" K frame is on your list, you will find a M 10 faster than any other model and they really are the bee's knees.

An S&W trigger shouldn’t be staged, just roll it on through.

I have a M64-2, 2” barrel. It’s in my carry rotation and will be shooting it tomorrow in our Back Up Gun match. While heavier than my LCR or my G42/Shield, I shoot it reasonably well and have confidence in it. Carrying it is not uncomfortable in my Privateer Leather OWB holster.

Only changes I made was to paint the front sight to make it more visible to my aged eyes and put pachmayr grips on it.

This and my 686-4 will never leave me until I give them to my grandsons.

Me too . . . here is my favorite . . . a 3" model 64 wearing Craig Spegel extended RB grips!
