Question about Model 65

Did Smith and Wesson ever produce a Model 65 with a 2" barrel?

Not to my knowledge. Model 65's were 3" and 4" barrels, Model 64's were made in 2", 3", and 4" both standard (skinny) and heavy barrel models.

I was wondering about it too, you can get Model 10's and 64's in 2 inch but I don't recall ever seeing a 2 inch Model 13 or 65.

Guess it's time to dig out the SCSW...

Probably safe, but no one will write you a check if it turns out not to be. The cylinder of a .357 Mag-chambered K frame is longer than the cylinder of a .38 Special-chambered K frame, so you or the gunsmith would have to remove that same amount that is the difference. On a M-65/13/19/66, there is very little of the rear of the barrel sticking out into the cylinder window (the space in the frame where the cylinder swings into). You will also need a shorter ejector rod.

I wouldn't do it. You would be spending quite a bit of cash just to make your Model 65 worth less and harder to sell.

I wish they had. That would be my favorite snubnose. My 3" 65 is my personal favorite. Also note that the 3" was round butt, and the 4" was square.

Don't bother- been there, don that. Tried this with a Model 10 2" barrel and a Model 13 frame. Had to take a few thousandths off the forcing cone to allow cylinder to close. Fired 6 Speer 140 grain JHP's, couldn't open the cylinder. A few gentle taps with a soft mallet got it open only to find the forcing cone cracked at the 6 o'clock position. Like a can opener was used on it. Don't waste your time or money. Model 10 barrel not heat-treated to withstand .357 pressures.

Most of the time a 1/2" of barrel length won't mean that much in terms of velocity, but with the .357 Magnum a 1/2" more of barrel for the gases to propel the bullet MEANS A LOT. Just remember, 1/2" is 20% of a 2.5" bbl!!

For a .38 spl. I carry a 2" gun, but for .357 I go with a 3" M65.
