Wasn't in the market, but got the opportunity to purchase this beautiful Highway Patrolman at a great price. The experts here date it to 1973 which tells me the grips are not correct. Can I assume it should be wearing "football" target stocks? Not my photos as I don't have it in hand yet.

Yes, Footballs. Target Stocks with the Speedloader Cut (like yours) did not appear till the early '80s, for N-Frames anyways. I think they were introduced earlier for K-Frames. The revolver and the stocks both look great. I'm sure the total package is worth what you paid for it. You can bide your time about finding proper Footballs or Magnas for it, if that's even important to you.

Target stocks were RARELY optioned on the Model 28, but once in a while you find them as original equipment, usually made of Walnut, however, not Goncalo Alves.

Standard shipping on model 28s were Magna grips. If that is the original box, it should state on the side if they were special order target stocks on it when it shipped. Either way, those stocks did not ship on your gun.
Add a photo of the end label when you get gun in hand and several folks here can tell if it shipped with Magna stocks or targets.

This time, I'm buying for the gun - not the grips. [emoji41] So what I'm guessing is that a previous owner took factory magnas off and replaced with the targets (not knowing or caring if they were "correct"). No biggie as these combat Culinas are heading east to go on it. Should be an awesome shooter (and my first M28).

Nice gun & stocks! (both sets) Combats look nice, but have not found any that fit me ok. My 28 no dash with Herretts. Bob

That's a mighty fine gun purchase there.

The gun looks practically new, nary a turn line. Those are the best ones to acquire because you get to be the "first" owner to really start shooting and using it.

At least I hope you plan on shooting and using it.:)

Thanks!

It does seem to be flawless (also per the seller), but I'm really looking forward to shooting the heck out of it!

You'll probably never know what the previous owner was thinking, but let's not assume he was totally clueless! :D

It could just as well be that he wanted
1) Targets because they fit his hand much better
2) Speedloader cut because he used the M28 for home defense and required a really fast reload.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Seller clarified that the box shows that it shipped with magma grips. I'll still be shooting it with the Culina combats. I have the exact same grips on a model 66 and they feel awesome in my hands. I'll be sure to post pics once I get everything home!

I choked on calling 28-2s shipping with Targets "rare" because the new 4" 28-2 that cost me $250 O.T.D. of a local FFL in 1980 was wearing Targets and I did not special order them. However, they were a help deciding to buy that particular 28 because I wanted to match the feel of my larger caliber S&Ws. Also, for decades the Washington State Patrol issued 6" Highway Patrolmans with Targets. I have no doubt that they ordered them with the Targets. I'd bet a nickel that they were not the only large police department to do so.

Since your "new" 28-2 does not have a turn line yet consider removing its cylinder stop and stoning its top edges with a super fine Arkansas knife sharpening stone. Just dull them removing as little metal as you can. While in theory a turn line would eventually form anyway, in my experience dulling the edges stops a turn line from forming.

Ya know, I'm aware of this process but honestly, an N Frame with the name "Highway Patrolman" seems to scream SHOOT ME! I see a turn line as a badge of honor on this baby. [emoji41]

Fair enough! And all good points. [emoji106]

Nice Bob!

As mentioned, I have a set of the Culina combats on my M66 and they just fit me perfect. The Culinas actually use N frame grips that are custom fit to the K frames so it's the same outside dimensions. Correct me if I'm wrong Jennifer .......

That's all well and good as long as you realize (you probably do) that the K-Frame M66 is noticeably smaller than the N-Frame M28 so there will be a difference in the stock size as well.

Jennifer Culina told me that they take N frame stocks and "special cut" them to fit the K frames. So, same outer size.
