Here's hoping everyone had a great Christmas and for a Happy New Year.
I haven't posted here for a couple of years but have read all post of interest and I must say the interest in the great American revolver is alive and well and in good hands!
I recently acquired an early production S&W 44 magnum in the blue, black box with the satin blue interior with the seal and lettering on top. The box needs a little help , the tools are missing, but the revolver itself is in unbelievable condition, as are the grips. I purchased the gun through a close friend, whose reputation is impeccable, who was representing an elderly gentleman. This person was the original purchaser and reportedly fired the revolver only a very few times.
I'm requesting that someone describe the appropriate grips for this gun as I think there may be a problem with them being original to the gun.I would post pictures, but at the present my camera is on the blink and I will have to purchase or borrow one to accomplish this.
The grips are definitely "Cokes", with the diamond surrounding the escutcheons, black washers on the inside, silver medallions outside and made of beautiful wood with reddish brown coloration and well defined black striping. There is nothing written inside the grips and I think I remember it being said on this Forum that they should have the serial number hand written in pencil. Perhaps this is what raises the question in my mind about the originality of the grips.
The gun itself appears, to my less than expert eyes, to be totally correct for early production. The serial number is 1604xx and is located in all the appropriate locations according to the SCofSW. The back strap is serrated with 6 groves. The finish is bright and highly polished as one would expect. The 5 screws are present as well.
I'll try and post up some photos of the outfit as soon as I get my hands on a decent camera.
Thanks in advance for the answers and perhaps some photos.
