Question for Simply Rugged users

I have read many threads about Simply Rugged holsters and I am interested in purchasing one or two.

I have a couple of questions for those who own them.

As their name states they are intended to be simple and rugged not "highly refined". With this in mind I am wondering how you would compare the overall finish and detail to other holsters? Galco are certainly not top of the line but are a readily available standard. Are Simply Rugged better in overall finish than Galco? The other holsters I own are Alessi. How do they compare?

I really like Simply Rugged's Celtic design and I am thinking of having this added to a silver dollar holster for my detective special or a regular sourdough for my 396NG. This would be somewhat of a "dress" holster and I would like a nice finish on it.

Also has anyone tried using the silver dollar holster with the lower belt slots with the revolver positioned between the 1 O'clock and 2 O'Clock positions on the belt outside the waistband? It looks like the angle might work and this is my perfered carry for a small revolver.

What you see on the SR site is what you get. They are plain, functional, and effective. They are not boned to the degree of an Alessi, but they don't cost as much and you don't have to wait for ages to get one.

I have both and like them both. Particularly during the summer months, I carry a J-frame in a SR Silver Dollar Pancake.

I also have one for 6" N frames for heavy duty out on the ranch.

For winter time and town livin' I change guns and go to an Alessi Belt Slide for a 4" N frame, or a 5 Shot OWB for a Model 19 snubbie. That change is more of a function of weather and clothing more than anything else.

SR's aren't as fancy or as detailed as an Alessi, but they aren't meant to be. Not to take anything away from a SR, but you get what you pay for and Alessi's are Cadillac's.

THe SR holsters are a good bang for the buck and hold a gun close and tight. My SR's are strictly undercover, and are completely plain, as are all of my holsters. Due to a case of Dunlop's disease, cross draw isn't practical for me so I can't help you there either.

If you want a fancy Sunday Go to Meetin' holster, check out Lobo Leather works here on the forum or El Paso Saddlery.

I like the Celtic design so I think i will give SR a try.

If the edge work and stiching are as nice as the one pictured I will be very happy.

I have a lot more Celtic in me then cowboy so for a fancy "bar bq" holster I think it would suit me better. I also have not seen any others like it.

Tooled Simply Rugged

This is our used SR holster that we bought second hand. It is used for hiking and horseback riding in the Blue Ridge. No complaints here.
I've not seen too many used ones for sale.

As far as the quality I think they stack up against anyone. I have three and they are all different (and I love them all).

Left to right I have a "Cuda" (with border stamp) for my M&P40c, a "120" (with basketweave) for my 6" 617, and a "Loaded Pancake" (with border stamp and retention strap) for my 6" 686+. The Loaded Pancake is special...my wife ordered it for me for Christmas after I spec'd it out for her. I wanted something cool for my new 686+ and it fit the bill perfectly. It's as close as I'll ever come to having a full custom holster. The retention strap is completely unnecessary (and is removeable) but I got it just so mine would be different :D

The extra photos help. All of those look like very nice holsters.

I was asking because I read a couple of post that felt some of the detail was lacking in the finish. Not a lack of boning etc but rough edge finishing and stiching. It sounds and looks like those experieces are the small minnority.

ab4ka I am in a similar position as my wife and kids want me to pick something out that they can get for me.

Flop-shank thanks for the heads up on he grips. The Celitc line is strong in our family. Grips with a Celtic pattern would make for another great gift for the family to get for me. I wonder if she can do L or N frame grips? D frame would be perfect if I go for the SR for my Det. Special.
 
just received my order from simply rugged, a "most versatile ammo pouch". what a great product!! this is exactly what i was looking for to carry a speed strip with my j frame. it can go on the belt or in a pocket, and it won't mar your belt because of the extra layer of leather that makes up the pouch.

Unfortunately, I didn't have good luck with Simply Rugged. I ordered two holsters, and when they arrived, they were as hard as a board, and the inside of the holsters felt like sand paper. I called Rob and asked him if they were supposed to be that way, and needed some breaking in, or what. He said they were trying out a new process, but that they shouldn't be like that. He asked me to send them back to him so he could look at them.

I did so, and a couple of weeks later, I got a check in the mail for a full refund. I didn't get any explanation of what was wrong, but he did refund all my money, including shipping costs (which is pretty rare.)
 
simply rugged service

ordered mine for a 629 4" and expected to wait one month or much longer. he had one in stock and was delivered in a week. plain, tough and heavy duty with a dark oxblood finish to go with black or brown; it conceals well. with 3 slots it can be made to ride high: it covers gun up to the butt. like it better than most production holsters.
 
Simply Rugged Holster

Unfortunately, I believe Rob's quality (Simply Rugged Holster) has dropped. Whether it was the from the move from Alaska or just simply his business is expanding too fast. I once got a top notch quality two belt slots Loaded Pancake (Fish Scale Embossing) for my 686 when he was in Alaska. To this day, it my favorite rig!!!. However, I ordered the same exact holster for a Ruger, unfortunately I received a three belt slots with super thin and had blue pen ink marks all over the back side of the holster. I returned it and I am waiting a refund. It appears to have become somewhat of a hit:) or miss:( with his leather gear.
 
While we're on the subject, I sure do like the SR pocket holster. I'm often frustrated by pocket holsters that are so padded they make the gun swell to the point it becomes ridiculous. The thin leather SR uses is just right for me and my J frame.

I've got one of those pocket protectors also...with the rough texture out. I use it to pocket carry my 642 and it's awesome.

I have purchased several of the Simply Rugges holsters, a belt and an ammo carrier in the last year from SR-Arizona and have been very happy with them. Mine were very high quality products and I use them frequently. Good luck, B
