Because without the moon clip, you have to poke the shell out of the cylinder with a pencil. The moon clip provides the metal that the ejector hits against to get the rounds to come out of the cylinder.

I used to do all my 10mm shooting without clips. Never had any problems with ejection, but I was getting serious erosion of my firing pin bushings. Using clips will largely prevent that, they tell me. I also had a couple of cylinder tieups due to primer flow around the firing pin. Clips stopped that, too.

The semi-auto cartridges are "rimless" thus there is no rim for the extractor to push against to remove the cartridges from the chamber. The moonclip, or RIMZ like I use headspace the cartridge, grip the extractor groove and remove the cartridges when it is time to extract. An additional benefit is that you can keep all your hulls together and even use .40 S&W if you want.

Thanks for replies. I didnt think about the extractor part. I like the fast reloading and keeps the brass easy to find with the Rimz
