Question - Model 25-2

I came across one that I'm told is LNIB. It has the box/tools...is supposed to look unfired.

It's being offered at $850 OTD...what the heck is the market on these cool old .45 ACP revolvers.

I like .45 ACP revolvers but do not want to get too excited if the gun is "over the top" as far as the price goes.

I bought a 25-2 with 6 inch barrel in 98% condition last year with the presentation case and paperwork for $550 from a forum member. To me $850 is to high but lets also see what others say.

After looking for a while, I picked up a 6 1/2-inch 25-2 NIB (unfired) on GB just eight months ago for $800 shipped, and I was very happy with the purchase. She's my only N-frame and a really pleasing revolver in every way, not NIB anymore--and I'm still very happy with the deal.

That said, I think $850 for a fired example is probably a tad on the high side. I'd tell him eight bills tops and see what happens.

I just purchased one from a forum member for $700, including shipping. So that's about $675 for the gun (no box or papers).
For LNIB with original box and papers (all in good shape), I'd probably go $725. I think that $850 is high.
On the other hand, a new Model 25 Classic has the lock, MIM parts, and also sells for around $850.
If you intend to keep it and treasure it and shoot it, let your conscience be your guide (with apologies to Jiminy Cricket).

I've seen exactly one, over the past year, and at the Birch Run, MI, gun show. Seller wanted $800 for it.

They're just not as common as other models.

Glad I got mine back in '81.

I think that $850 is a pretty common asking price as evidenced by the online auction sites. I also think that those $850 guns tend to sit and gather dust without a bid while guns in the $500-$650 range actually change hands.

I just found a 25-5 nearly as new in box for $749. I would gladly have paid another $100 to get a 25-2 in 45ACP in the same or better condition.

It is high for today's market. But, it my opinion the gun is worth it. You know the old saying, you can't pay too much, just too soon.

After all, how much do they want for the new S&W's made today? A lot of people think the older ones are better. I don't necessarily agree with that, but model 25's in acp are one of my favorite S&W's.

If you mean it comes with a presentation box and tools , you can figure at least $100.00 for the box and tools. In fact if you do buy it and don't want the box, tools etc. I'll buy it from you, depending on shape.

As with all Smith's condition is everything--$600.00 for shooters if you can find one and on up and away from there.

You'll love the gun--it's my absolute favorite and reasonable to shoot also. (Wish I had a 4" also.) You can find ammo anywhere.

Bought a 98% 25-2 at the Prescott AZ show no box, but I got a D-Mooner and 20 full moon clips - $500 OTD.

Does it have the 6 1/2 or 6 inch barrel? I think you might have to look long and hard to find one in that condition, even for that money. It may be a bit too high, but you can spend a lot of money looking for another one, and maybe it will not be a reasonable.

If it is a 6 1/2 inch, NIB or close, and you want to keep it forever, what is $850?. No one wants to pay too much, but if you aren't looking to turn it over, what is a 100 or so more? They will continue to become harder and harder to find, especially in that condition. Again, go for it, if you really want it badly, plan to keep it indefinately, and you have the funds. If not, pass on it. I would draw the line if it were just a 6inch. Nothing wrong with the 6, but a 6 1/2 is just a tad better. Put an 'N' frame 6 inch, any model or caliber, next to a 6 1/2 and you will know what I'm talking about. Regardless, good luck on your decision.

Thanks....the guy came down to $800...I'm sitting it out for now. The gun is 97%...but it's really a shooter rather than a safe queen....for the money...not sure.

I gave $725 for this one at a local shop and am pleased. I just don't fret over $100 or so when it is something I want and something I have had a hard time finding. I also like handling what I buy unless I know the distant seller. It is increbibly accurate with standard ball ammo and also so with .454" 260 gr Keith's that I load in AR brass. Really a fun piece. I say buy it and be done. ;-)
