Question on 27-2

My buddy snagged a beautiful nickel 27-2 4" off of a local gun board yesterday. He called me today and I looked up the serial number and it's a 1980 gun. He said that it didn't have the white outline/red ramp sights which is listed as standard on the 4" barrel. It also has a smooth combat trigger and the target hammer. So I'm guessing this was a special order gun? If so, does this hurt or help the value of the gun?

There are some real Model 27 nuts around here who will give you their opinion but I doubt that revolver is a special order piece. By the time it was made, there really wasn't much special ordering going on at S&W.

As to value, I would say it is what it is. Some people prefer the RR/WO sight combination and some don't. I would think value to the potential buyer will be a matter of his preference.

That's a nice looking revolver. There is a lot of interest in the short-barrelled 27s right now.

That's a NICE 27! If it is a special order revolver it should bring a higher value as it's "one off" so to speak. Tell your buddy to get the sixguns history from S&W and get the letter from them on it! I forget what it costs, but documentation on it would help in it's value and determining where it's been. One of the better looking 27's I've seen lately. Grips are worth big money as they really set that 27 off.

I doubt it was a special order revolver. I personally like blacked out sights for target shooting.

The pic is the one posted by the seller in the ad and I haven't seen the gun in person yet. But from the pics it does look like a beauty. I can't wait to get my hands on it for a closer inspection.

I didn't realize that special ordering had tapered off by 1980, that's good info to know. But that makes me even more curious how this gun didn't get the RR/WO sights.

As far as personal preference, for my tastes the plain sights and smooth trigger would be preferable. I've never been a big fan of the RR/WO configuration and I love a smooth trigger for DA shooting. But it's a moot point. My buddy sold a S&W 27-2 Nickel with 3 1/2" barrel last year about this time. He's regretted it ever since. I don't think this one is going anywhere...
