I just picked up a 686 no dash 4" revolver as part of a trade. If the value of this revolver in today's market is high enough, I'll put it up for sale in the classifieds section, but I need some input on what a fair price would be.

The S/N is AJE93xx, and there's "M" over the model number under the crane. The original stocks have a 10/3/1985 date on them, and the revolver has been carried some and fired little by a local auxiliary police officer. Also, there's no box or papers.

The gun is in excellent condition, locks up super tight, and has a smooth double action and crisp single action trigger. I'm attaching a few pictures.

Thanks much.

The "M" stamp inside the frame means that the gun was modified from the earlier version of the 686. This modification involved the hammer nose, hammer nose rivet and the bushing. It was done to improve reliability with some loads.

The gun would be a good shooter with Magnum ammunition and very mild with .38 Special loads.

Around here, guns like this are bringing $350 and up, depending on condition.

Hope this helps.

$350 for starters?...maybe without a cylinder. Thats a $450-$500 gun all day long in my opinion. The few "comps" I found on GB sold for upper 400's and low 500's. There are several that are in the mid to upper 5's and low 6's that have not sold and get relisted EVERY week.

I recently picked up a 686-3 at a gun show for $375 in like condition, but I doubt I would let it go for that.

In that condition, with those stocks, that gun is at least 600 dollars retail. Frankly, it looks to be unused, I don't even see a turn line on the cylinder.

I saw a couple that were in reasonably nice condition at the last show I went to. They were not selling at their asking price of $450-500. Asking and getting are two different things...

Thank you all for your help with this...one of the great things about the people on this forum is that I can throw out a question like my original post here, and get sincerely helpful answers.

About the revolver, there's a slight turn ring on the cylinder, and a few very minor surface imperfections on the stainless surfaces.

The stocks have no chips or scratches that I can see...kind of reminds me of the stocks on my first centerfire handgun, a blued model 19 from 1970.

I'd keep this gun, except for its 44oz loaded weight. As I move into my geezer years, I'm finding lighter guns are easier to shoot and carry.

I still like revolvers over semi's, and if I was fortunate enough to find a K-frame, that would probably be perfect for me right now, especially since I'll be shooting medium velocity .357 reloads for practice, and carrying factory ammo that will top out at around 1100-1200fps in .357, or +P .38's.

Well thanks again, and I hope that you all have a great holiday tomorrow.

4" 686's are in high demand right now. A nice prelock with Goncolo Alves(sp?) in that condition would be at least a $600 gun here.

Five months ago I paid $600. out-the-door for a 4-inch dash 4 in pristine like-new cond.
I am extremely happy with that deal.

I notice that the hammer & trigger are not case-hardened.
Can someone enlighten me as to why that is?

Recently bought a NIB for $590 in Central TX. They have more.

Used guns bring way too much money.
