Question for you 617-6 owners. I lucked out and bought a brand new S&W 617-6 from Scheels Sporting goods. Was able to use $175.00 in gift points. So that was nice. I only was able to shoot it 10 times because range was closing and they were nice enough to let me shoot it for function. Shot 3 shots at 7 yards then made a sight move to bring my shots up. Shot 7 more shots. shooting a little low about 1 inch but all 1 hole. So started turn the screw counter clockwise like manual said to bring impact UP and shoot 3 or 4 quick shots before range turned lights out. Will it feels like I have bottom out the screw that raises bullet impact. Did not want to force screw any more , sure felt like that was the last turn on the screw. Just did not have time to do anything more because they were closing range. So couple questions for you guys…..
1….I was shooting Aquila ammo 1235 FPS round nose lead.
The 7 shots were very close to one hole at 7 yards but 1 inch low.
So next when I shoot a target at 25 yards would bullet impact be rising a little and put me on the X ? maybe with such a slow Bullet not enough rise to notice at 25 yards ? I always thought shooting a rifle bullet would rise some from 7 yards to 25 yards or so ?
2…. Question 2 ….So let’s say I am turning the screw in the right direction (counter clockwise ) like manual says , ha ha. And I am bottom out on the sight screw any suggestion on what I could do to bring my shot impact up a little ? It’s a nice gun and shooting excellent groups but low. Now please keep in mind I put the bottom of front post sight right on the bottom of X bills eye.
Just ran out of time to shoot more than 10 shots. Look forward to your ideas. MD

I wouldn't do any adjustments until you can get to a range and zero the sights for 12 to 15 yards. Look at this chart and it shows you can be within about 1 inch out to about 40 yards. This chart is for Minimags from a pistol, assuming about 1000fps from a 6" barrel.

If you go to the shooterscalculator.com site you can input information and get a chart for a specific 22lr load with just some basic info.

I would spend more time with it and try some different distances and maybe some different ammo before I worried much about it!

Here's a handy chart for 22LR velocity versus barrel length.

Sounds good guys. Yes 7 yards is a lot different Than 25 yards. Just ran out of time at the range. I Will keep my fingers crossed and hope impact will rise at 25 yards. I will say it seems really accurate , at 7 yards anyway. Ha ha. I will report back in a week or two when I get to the range. Oh and thanks for the good charts. Thanks. Marty

Congrats on a fine choice. My bet is that your 617 will quickly become a favorite. As for point of impact, you will need to play with it at your preferred actual shooting distances. I'm betting you'll be fine with rear sight adjustment range . What is worth noting is that different velocity ammo will shoot in different places. ( Higher velocity ammo generally shoots higher at longer ranges, btw) So when you go to the range, bring several ammo's to see what it shoots most accurately and then adjust your sights to that. Enjoy!

Thanks for the link. It confirmed my choice of the Zero distance I picked for a new .308.

The higher the velocity the lower it will shoot at normal distances. The 617 is a target revolver, and best shot with the "Standard Velocity". I shoot the Aguila Sub Sonic (standard vel) and it has wonderful accuracy.

The 617 in my opinion is a everything gun , target , competition, hunter, plinker!! I site in at 15 yards with a 6 o’clock hold , 7 yards 3 o’clock or cover half of target , 25 yrds a 6 o’clock with maybe a touch of daylight visible . This is with Federal classic’s which is very well liked by most of my k22’s, but sadly hard to find. Like all rimfires they’re picky but can like several too , ex: my 617-6 shoots fed. classic, cci blazer, and armscor close enough that I would feel comfortable with any while hunting or target. Another thing is put a red dot on and it’s easier to move the dot around the target . At 65 I tend to use my 617 with the red dot more . Hopefully you’ll be able to start find more selections of ammo to try . Happy shooting!
