About a month ago I bought my first firearm, it is a M&P .40 FS and I have fired approximately 400 rounds through it, 50 - 100 rounds each time at the range. I clean it after each use and oil it where manual says and then wipe it all down with a special gun cloth. But already there are several places that are showing wear, is this normal? I'm not an expert so please excuse my ignorance if I don't call the part the correct name.. The little edges that the top goes onto and it slides back and forth on have lines where the black has worn off and it is down to the silver. Also inside the top where the bore ?? square top goes back and forth, inside of it, you can see a wear mark where it has been rubbing.... Sorry I can't explain these parts better, but if need be I'll pull out my manual to describe them more accurately. Since this is my first gun I don't have a clue if this is normal or not and don't want to keep using the gun if something is wrong with it. Thanks for any advise you can give.

My M&P has a similar round count to yours, and it has some wear marks on the top of the barrel as well as on the rails where the slide rides. It's perfectly normal...so unless there's something really unusual or the marks on your pistol's rails are asymmetrical I wouldn't worry about it since you've been following the manual's instructions for maintenance.

Sounds normal.
And some of that wear makes it smoother, slicker and cycle better!

Some of the same wear should be happening to the trigger, and it's probably getting better also.

Thanks so much for the replies... I feel better now! The gun shop I bought it at is closed on Sundays and Mondays so I couldn't ask them about it until Tuesday and I just didn't want to do more damage to it if something was wrong. I have to go there Thursday and pick up the new M&P .40 compact I bought yesterday, maybe I'll bring it with me and have them take a look anyways, it can't hurt. Thanks again

If you were doing damage, it would probably be malfunctioning and the accuracy might tend to suffer. If its something that looks extreme to you, however, have your friendly gun shop look at it. Also, make sure that you're putting a light coat of lube in all the recommended places, including the places that appear to be showing wear.

It doesn't appear to be extreme, but it was worrying me. Don't know where I got the idea that the gun would look like new forever! Just worried I was seeing the wear so soon. I bought an entire pistol cleaning kit and was told to follow the directions, however it was a little daunting that the instructions weren't very specific and the cleaning kit called all the parts different than what they are named in the manual. I ended up looking for info online and found so many conflicing ways to do it. Decided if I used common sense and used a combination of theories that hopefully I would be doing something right. One time I thought maybe I didn't put enough oil, so the next time I used a little more on the 7 spots Smith and Wesson says to oil, well when I got home from the range, it didn't take long to realize that I used too much oil which makes more stuff stick to the gun. Hopefully this time I have found a happy medium. Thanks everyone for being so helpful to a clueless newb...
