I found a great little Model 36 today. The blue is in need of some TLC in some places, but overall the gun's action is nice and tight. This is my first Model 36. It has a Serial # stamped on the bottom beginning with 710xxx. In looking at my S&W catalog for this model it is hard to determine the date of birth. It seemed that early models would have had a lower serial number. Am I missing something here?

Within the inner cylinder bridge it is stamped only as a Mod 36 with no dash number.

Can you guys provide me with some info on this Model 36?

-Also-

I found a Model 36 with a flat latch today. Yes, an older model with diamond grips as well. The blue is in great shape as well. Very pretty gun. What would a gun like that be worth? I passed on it, but could go back.

the 710XXX 36 is probably from about 1967-68, i would guess. scosw lists 786544 as 1969. the flat latch was changed to the "regular" latch in 1966, and the diamond grips were changed in 1968.

that ought to narrow it down a bit. a letter would make it official! sweet guns. post a pic or two!

36s aren't particularly rare, so condition is everything. a mint, early flat latch with its correct diamond grips should bring upwards of 400, even more with the original box, etc.

a shooter, even in 90-95 % range can be found for much less occasionally. i got a really nice (98%) 36 flat latch, diamond grip, no box, several years ago for 335.00. needless to say, i jumped on it!

they are good guns, easy to shoot, accurate, sturdy, and concealable. i figure thay appreciate in value every day!

The 36-2 was the first engineering change of the 2"; the 36-1 was the 3" heavy barrel version and was produced at the same time as the 36. The "no-dash" was made from 1957 to 1988. Regarding the older one you saw, if it was not stamped MOD 36 it could be an earlier version (1952-'56) and worth somewhat more.
