My previous CC was a Glock 26 with this IWB holster: Split Decision

I generally like it. While I do have a couple minor irritations with it, it is also the only holster I have ever used, so I have nothing to compare it to.

For my new Shield, I am looking at something like either the Old Faithful IWB (Quick-Assemble-Kit - Inside the Waistband - Hip - Gun Holster Kit - Old Faithful Holsters) or maybe something more in the style of my current holster, like the Infidel (Inside Waistband Holsters - products new home - The Infidel Holster).

I'm not looking as much for comments on the specific models I've noted about (unless you think one of them is just absolutely horrible for some reason) - I'm more interested in the style differences. Specifically, I'm wondering about the "backing" (I'm not even sure what the correct term is).

One of my thoughts about my current holster is that I do periodically (lightly) jab myself with the base of the magazine depending on how I am sitting. I also note that when I have an undershirt on between my skin and the gun/holster, it is MUCH more comfortable. These make me think having that backing would be very beneficial.

On the other hand, I live in San Antonio - it's rather hot here most of the year, and I worry - will that extra leather backing just end up being uncomfortable because it will just get hot? I don't work outside all day or anything, but I'd like to be able to walk around my neighborhood or through a parking lot without regretting that.

I also like the ability of my current holster to quickly take it off / put it on - I think having all that extra layer to "position" may make that harder.

Any thoughts on this? Does having that extra layer make it a lot warmer?

Thanks

The least comfortable way to carry is IWB for the reasons you cited. You will always pinch or poke something. I always recommend going to your local store and comparing holsters. We stock hundreds and your local police supply store should be able to explain differences in the models.

I bought one of the old faithful holsters kits, it was meh... A guy I work with found the kholster guys for the same price already put together and free shipping... He likes his. I might get one for my glock...

Unfortunately, again due to the warm weather, I doubt anything other than IWB is realistic. I've looked around at a couple local stores, but I found that they tend to have a relatively small selection.

Tinn-Can/JFootin,
I appreciate the feedback, but I'm more interested in comments/feedback regarding the relative styles of holster rather than the specific brands which make them.

Thanks

Different brands make different styles, so it is very hard to give feedback without noting who makes them.

So, I guess my question still stands about those style of holsters. Does the extra leather backing get hot? Or is it pretty neutral?

I find the horsehide backing on one of my hybrids does not get hot. It is the most comfortable holster I own, but not the easiest to get on/off. Neoprene used on another really comfortable brand with full grip coverage does get a little sweaty, IME.

I carry consistently and my favorite for the M&P Shield 9mm is the Sneaky Pete. It sits on my belt, completely concealed (looks like a large cell phone holster), its readily accessible, I can wear it with "church" clothes, shorts, jeans, whatever. Not trying to sell anything just a personal observation. And in 5 weeks of daily wear nobody has noticed or acknowledged the weapon.
