JUST FOUND THIS SITE AND HAVE QUESTION PERHAPS SOMEONE MAY BE ABLE TO ANSWER.
I`M AN OLD GUY AND DON`T KNOW MUCH ABOUT NAVIGATING AROUND SITES. NOT SURE IF THIS TS THE RIGHT PLACE TO ASK QUESTIONS. ANYHOW;

I HAVE A MODEL 57 SMITH I HAVE HAD FOR MANY YEARS.
THIS ONE IS CHAMBERED FOR AND MARKED AS SUCH .44 MAG.
HAVE NEVER HEARD OF ONE IN ANYTHING OTHER THAN .41 CAL. IS THIS POSSIBLE OR IS IT PERHAPS A MISMARKED MODEL 29? SERIAL NO IS PREFIXED WITH S.

HAS ANYONE RUN INTO THIS BEFORE ?

Reading a post typed in all upper case letters is like someone yelling at you. LOL! I have never heard of a Model 57 in 44 magnum. There are some real Smith and Wesson experts on this forum. Hopefully one of them will reply. I like the 41 magnum, in concept. I don't own one but if I ever start reloading I will.

Welcome to the forum, you are in the best place to get your questions answered, but you will get with the experts if you post on the forums near the top of the forum list page under one of the revolvers heading. Which forum depends on the age of your gun Revolvers 1960 to 1980 or Revolvers 1980 to the present.

One thing I can say is that your gun was made after 1957 to 1960 (I can't remember the exact year) because that was when they started using model numbers.

Welcome to the Forum and don't worry about being computer
"challenged" as most of us older guys are.
Just click on the "Smith and Wesson Forum" at top left of the page
and it will give you a list of the sub-forums. Please try and
post your question/comment in the appropriate forum or the
Mods will move your posting.
Try to see if a 44 mag. cartridge will slide into the cylinder
and if it does then it is not a model 57 which is a .41 mag
Probably a mismarked/stamped model 29 in reality.

Question

Hey, Old Guy, nearly all of us are challenged by the new technology. Twenty-five years ago, when they said nearly every home would have a computer, I laughed out loud (lol)! Don't get me started! I have never seen a Model 57 S & W , in anything but .41 Magnum caliber. I am somewhat confused, as you said you had owned the weapon for many years..Have you never fired it? I would not be really concerned, as a .44 Mag cartridge will not fit into the cylinder of a .41 mag. If, by some strange set of circumstances, the revolver were mis-marked, and really was a .44 cal, and you had fired it, with .41 mag ammo, I believe every last shell casing would have been grossly deformed, if not split! Please let us know if this revolver, is in fact, a .44 mag (mdl 29) mis-stamp, as the price of the revolver, price-wise, suddenly jumped exponentially!!!Like the .41 mag alot!
