questions about chambering a round

Excuse my lack of knowledge, but I need to ask this so I can learn more about my gun. I have an M&P 9c. When inserting a full mag with the slide back, I need to pull the slide back further and then release it to chamber a round. This is fine with me, but should the slide release automatically? Another question is this---if a full mag is inserted into the pistol with the slide forward, will it ever automatically chamber a round? There might be a situation where I want to carry with a loaded mag but without one in the chamber.

Simple answer, The slide will not automatically release. Some have reported that it does, but IMO this is because they slam the mag. into place and the shock releases the slide. It isn't desiged to do that (but it might). Is this clear?

To your second question. If there is no round in the chamber and the slide is closed when you insert a fully loaded magazine, then the gun will never automatically load one in the chamber. You will always have to pull the slide back to chamber a round.

BTW, to see if there is a round in the chamber, look into the small hole between the slide and the breech end of the barrel.. If you see brass color, the chamber is loaded.

As far as the slide releasing itself, I do it all the time. I think Berettas also do this.

my slide does not release itself but then again i dont slam the magazine in that hard

I can't afford the M&P but my Hi Point does not slam forward when the mag is inserted, maybe because I can't afford the ammo and the mag is empty........... Nice purchase.

If you are going to ask that question, then IMO you need to take a handgun safety class.

Treat EVERY handgun like it it does have a round in the chamber and hopefully you'll be accident free... Mine sometimes chambers a round when I slam in a fresh mag but not always.

True, but not when the slide is already in battery. I think the OP was asking if a round would chamber itself without him having to rack the slide. If your gun does that, it's time to call S&W!

Take your M&P to "On Target", off of Sweeten Creek rd. Someone there will be glad to show you how to safely load, discharge and make safe again your weapon. They are good people there.

There's no public outdoor range in Buncombe Co. I know of but check out the Wayne Smith Outdoor Range in Haywood Co. It's a NC Wildlife range about 45 min +/- from Asheville and is a nice ride along the Pigeon River.
