I need to go and check which 945 I have and take a look at my S&W book, but I was discussing it with someone today and we got around to barrel lengths and serial numbers and so on and I have been wondering about a few things all afternoon.

Are there serial number prefixes specifically identified with the 3.75 and 4" models or do they share common prefixes?

Of those two, which is the less common? If I recall correctly, the 4" has a steel frame and the 3.75" has alloy...is that right?

Thanks for any help.

You are right on the alloy vs steel frames.

I think production numbers are about the same.

Serial number prefixes are specific to the production runs, and customers who placed the orders.

I could be wrong, I have been before,

Thanks for the information.

I was able to get to my Supica / Nahas book last night and sort it out as well.
