I have a 642-1 that I bought that was disassembled, and missing parts.
When I was assembling the revolver today, I cannot get the side plate back on the revolver.
I noticed that the rebound slide pin is hitting the side plate. There is no cut out in the side plate for the pin nor for the hammer block.
My question - Does the newer 642 use the rebound slide pin or the hammer block? On the older Smiths, the hammer block rides on the rebound slide pin.
I do not have a newer model 642 here to look at and the parts that I am using are for older Smiths. The diagrams on line do not list these parts for some models.
If the newer 642's do not use the rebound slide pin, does the pin come out of the slide assembly? If so, how.
I have the revolver assembled without the side plate, and it appears to be functioning fine.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The shrouded hammer models don't use a hammer block, and the rebound slide doesn't have the pin on the side.

Thank you for the reply.
I need to get the pin out of the rebound slide. It is an older slide out of a 649. Does the pin come out of the block. if so how does a person get it out, or will it have to be ground off?

All the ones I've seen would have to be ground off. If you're in no hurry, S&W is pretty good on parts. Usually you'll have them in a week or so.

I just used a small file on the pin, and it came off pretty easily.
Put it back together and it functions great.
I learned something new about hammerless S&W's today.
Thank you pinkymingeo.
