Howdy, friend lives in another state and has an EZ 380 with safety. His first. Handgun. He doesn't like having to drop the mag and eject the round in the chamber to make the gun safe. Question is can you rack the slide with the safety on to clear the chamber. That would work .

If there is a round in the magazine it will chamber when he racks the slide no matter if the safety is on or not. The only way to assure the gun is empty is to drop the magazine and rack it a couple of times.

You need to tell your friend to stop being lazy and to clear his weapon properly...there is a right way and a wrong way and being lazy is definitely the wrong way.

It sure can. From the manual:

The magazine can be removed and installed in the pistol regardless of the position of the safety lever. The slide can be manip- ulated to load (or unload) the chamber regardless of the position of the manual thumb safety lever.

Heck of a good idea - go S&W!

Novak's used to alter 1911 safeties and slide for the same operation, and may still, I don't know.

I am sure that many will agree than a handgun is not fully safe with a loaded magazine in place even if the chamber is empty and the thumb safety is engaged, especially if his intent is to make the weapon safe for maintenance or handling.

If I may add if the owner is new to guns that he read its manual closely. And if the 380EZ is the same as the 9EZ then there are notations about not holding the grip safety during take down and reassembly. It can create some havoc if its not followed so just an fyi.

You want someone to actually put fourth the EFFORT to read the Owner's Manual of a $4-500 pistol, when people buy $ 50,000 vehicle and never open the manual?:D

Not dropping the mag first will simply eject the round in the chamber and then load the next round in the magazine. To safely unload a gun, drop the magazine, lock the slide to the rear using the slide lock, inspect he chamber to verify it is empty, then ease the slide forward to close the action. Never let the slide fly forward on an empty chamber.

The EZ has a loaded chamber indicator on the top of the slide but I wouldn't rely on it. And yes, the slide can be racked with the safety on.

It's impossible to make any semi-auto safe with a loaded mag in it. Every time you rack the slide a new round goes in the chamber. I think your buddy is mechanically challenged if he doesn't understand that simple fact.

What would happen if you lock the slide and see there is a round chambered and hit the release slide?

That would be a problem. If you locked the slide to the rear it should have ejected that round in the chamber. If it didn't, you extractor is broken. But even if you hit the slide release, it would strip a new round off the magazine and try to chamber it. Of course, the round already in the chamber would prevent that. You'd have to clear the malfunction and try to figure out why the round wasn't ejected when you racked the slide back.

Not trying to be rude, because we were all new once, but you and your friend need to become more familiar with how a semi auto pistol operates before you load one round into that chamber. The loaded chamber indicator on the top of the slide( which I actually like) is a real asset for people like you. Thinking a gun is empty when it isn't and not knowing how to properly unload it is going to get somebody hurt or worse. Perhaps a revolver is a better choice, for now. At the very least, watch lots of videos on YouTube. Just type in "how a semi automatic pistol works". Doesn't have to be the exact same model. It's all basically the same principle. I bet they even have a "how a S&W M&P works".

IMHO, the gun is safe when loaded. When a person handles the gun the combination of the person and gun may be unsafe.
Regardless, the gentleman is in need of firearms training.
