So this Christmas I'm planning on buying my father a handgun. I've never bought a gun as a gift, how would I go about doing that? We live in illinois (my father and myself) he has a valid foid card if that helps at all. Just looking for answers. I'd call my lgs but they're closed for the afternoon for whatever reason. Thanks in advance ladies and gents.
Edit: I've looked online and I've found mixed answers, I just want this to be as painless and legal as possible to prevent any issues in the future.

If you are legal to own/buy a handgun and your father is also, go buy the handgun. It's legal to gift a handgun.

To me it doesn't feel the same as giving him a handgun. Ive always felt like gift cards are the easy way out of actually spending the time and putting effort into getting someone something they will enjoy and cherish for years to come.

I understand what you are saying. You can still spend the time and effort into getting him his gift. Give the card, with a note saying you found the perfect gift at your LGS. Using the card removes all the potential legal entanglements that unfornately come with giving a gun as a gift.

It is legal to buy a gun as a gift. It says so right on the 4473:

Question 11.a. Actual Transferee/Buyer:
For purposes of this form, you are the actual transferee/buyer if you are purchasing the firearm for yourself or otherwise acquiring the firearm for yourself (e.g., redeeming the firearm from pawn/retrieving it from consignment, firearm raffle winner). You are also the actual transferee/buyer if you are legitimately purchasing the firearm as a gift for a third party.
