Quick Range Report

Went to the range again for a bit this afternoon; I added a .75" cheek riser to the stock of the rifle, and I fiddled around with the fore/aft mounting of the 3-9x40 Simmons scope, therefor everything needed to be adjusted and op-tested. Unfortunately, the bipod I had ordered did not come in (and will not. Long story for a rainy day), so I chose to use my elbow resting on the bench, instead.

Conditions for the shoot: indoor range, Africa-hot at 91F, fairly low light, 25 yards, ammo used CCI tactical (40 grain, copper plated solid bullet, 1200 fps and 128 ft-lbs @ muzzle), shooter was hungry and hot.

Scope sighted in. Notice the flyer to the left - caused by me, not the ammo or gun.



Some totally unsupported free hand shooting. Better than last time, but lots of room for improvement.

Nice shooting. Today I used the same ammo but only at 50 yards. While my groups normally look like those above (center picture) at 25 yards, today was much different. I didn't take a picture, but my results were more like the third picture, no real center, not consistent, many flyers. When I switched over to the standard velocity CCI ammo, my 50 yard group looked like the center target. Happy with that, but concerned that I now have 3,700 rounds of ammo that hasn't performed up to expectations.

Thanks for the pics. I am fighting with trying to get my flip ups & my red dot to co-witness.
I had the red dot before I got my backup sights & it seemed to work well just mounted buy it's self.
So to start with I got it on target at 10 yards then 15 as I moved the target out to 20 & 25 the shots started to rise is that normal ?
Shooting both CCI mini mags & Federal both 40 grain.

I am far from being an expert on sights/co-witness/red dots/scopes etc. I am reasonably sure, though, that if sighting in at 10 yards initially, I would expect my point of impact to be a little higher than my point of aim at 15, 25, and so on. Up until the bullet starts to descend again. I have no clue on the ballistics of 22LR ammo. The 5.56 NATO round, in conjunction with standard A2 sights, as an example, has a trajectory were the bullet is at the same height at 200 yards as it was at 25 yards. Remember, bullets travel at a slight arc, first rising, then falling.

That is what I was thinking too. This is my first AR platform & first time at trying to do anything but plug beer cans with a 22.
But my plan is to put this 15-22 to work squirrel hunting, just wondering is 25 yards about right for hitting those little tree rats ?

You are welcome, on both counts. As far as 25 yards being the just-about-right distance for squirrels....I don't know. Maybe take a look at the ballistic performance of your preferred ammo and see what distance the manufacture uses as their zero standard. The ammo I used today, well, yesterday now actually, says 50 yards.

Well, I am all finished cleaning up my guns and magazines that I shot today. Time to turn in.

The CCI Tactical has a trajectory of: +.1@25yds, 0@50yds, -2.1@75yds, and -6.2@100yds. Headed to the range tomorrow and needed the info for a new red dot and mount.

OK just so I got this right, the shot is still not at the top of the trajectory at 25y ?
