Quick Ruger question

When I remarried my wife brought a Ruger Security Six, no box or manual, along with a truck load of less interesting stuff to the marriage. We have shot it several times over the last three years. She shoots it mainly, but I like it too. I always wipe it down and run patches and brush through it after each shooting. Yesterday was the first time I removed the grips. Inside on the right grip was a tiny hole with an approximately one inch long pin inserted. This must be some kind of spare part as I cannot see how it would affect the grips. What is it?

I wasn't 100% sure, so I looked in my manual. It is a take down pin you use to lock back the hammer spring so it can be removed. When I got my Security Six at a show several years ago, it didn't come with a manual. However, you can go to the Ruger website and download a PDF of it. That would be a good idea for you to do. The Security Six is a great revolver IMHO.

I believe it is an aid for disassembly. As part of the takedown process, the hammer is cocked and this pin is inserted in a hole in the strut. Then the trigger is pulled, relieving pressure on the hammer.

You can also use a paper clip.

Full disassembly procedures are probably available on the Ruger website.

It's used to retain the hammer spring. There's a couple of videos on youtube that are good. Check "Ruger disassembly/reassembly". part 1 and 2.

Well, I guess i was wrong. I heard Rugers were popular prom guns back in the eighties and that pin is a spare in case the corsage didn't come with one.

Must be a Ruger thing. My SP101 has the same pin - it is for disassembly / removal of the mainspring.

As shown:

Remove the grip.

Cock the hammer, exposing the hole that the pin goes through.

Insert the pin through the hole, and pull the trigger and allow the hammer to drop forward.

This compresses the mainspring for removal.

haha im such an idiot sometimes, i saw that on my sp and though hmmm must be for stiffening the rubber grip or something, then promptly forgot about it .
im in my own little world most times .

the first time i took a ruger apart i didnt compress the main spring...took me 2 days to get it back together lol.
