Quiz: Spot that S&W on TV/Movies

6" M28 carried by Al Lettieri as the heavy in the Steve MCQueen/Ali McGraw version of "The Getaway"
I thought Lettieri had a snub Python. When he was in the car with a young girl and shot in the shoulder chasing McQueen, it looked like a Python. But I saw that movie a long time ago. Also in one of the early "Dirty Harry" movies, Harry's sidekick, "DeGorgio" looks like he's carrying a 4" N frame when he goes into the warehouse where he ultimately gets shot.

One of my favorite shows in the 80's was Knight Rider. In the pilot episode there was a model 36. In the episode Short Notice, there was a nickel Model 19 6" I'm pretty sure.

In the movie Tango & Cash I think Kurt Russell in th first of the movie had a 6" 686 with a laser. Stallone carried a 36 also. Please correct me if I'm wrong with identifing these.

In the movie "Electraglide in Blue", Robert Blake's partner, Zipper, had a fixed-sight N frame (38/44 HD?). Wyo-Treat Williams in that pic from "Flashpoint". That's a good way to trigger a round off next to one's ear by having a finger on the trigger of a cocked DA revolver with it in that position. Especially with adrenalin pumping!

I almost forgot.....

Simon and Simon. AJ carried a model 66 2 1/2" and Rick carried a 629 6".

How I love the 80's

Exactly true. A great example of exactly how NOT to do it!

That something else would have dwarfed Eastwood who is nearly dwarf sized in real life and it would have looked foolish for him to carry anything larger than the Model 19.

The script and camera angles took care of the illusion that he had something else.

My God, where do you people get this bogus info? The Dirty Harry gun was a Model 29 blue, 6 1/2 inch barrel. This has been discussed over and over again, and yet the old rumors come back every single time this topic comes up. Does anyone ever do research these days, or have we descended into a society that does no independent research and just passes rumors. I have seen the revolver and John Milius, the director has confirmed it.

Thus, it was NOT a Model 57, 19, 25, 27, 28 or any other model. It was a 6 1/2 inch blue Model 29. The only time anything different was used was the 8 3/8 inch Model 29 used for the poster made for the film The Dead Pool, I think, or perhaps the one before it. That fact is confirmed by factory shipping records and an article by Roy Jinks in the S&W Collectors Association Journal of the period.

Hey all. Just last night watched "Grosse pointe blank" and Dan Aykroyds'character does a 'Hit' as a doorman, on no less than 3 bad guys with what looks to be 2 Performance Center 629s with the slab side barrels.
After blowing away the bad guys he simply throws down the guns and walks away.
They may be P.C. 627 Hunters or others ,,I don't know. But it was interesting to see ,especially since I own a 629-5 P.C. Magnum Hunter.

I have recently been watching my daughters DVDs of the TV show "Bones" In the first season, FBI agent, Seely Booth carries a Model 686, round butt. Sometimes it is a six inch, carried crossdraw on the waist and at other times it is a 4inch in a shoulder rig.
regards,
Ralph

Homicide Life on the Street.
Gee carries a Model 60.
So does the red-headed lady sergeant.
In the episode known as "Prison Riot", a New Departure is used in the revenge killing of a drug dealer who shoots an innocent woman in a drive-by shooting.

Amen! When I saw this thread, I knew this was going to come up! Follow this link to a YouTube of John Milius, screenwriter of Dirty Harry and Magnum Force talking about obtaining one of the original prop guns. Might have to copy and paste. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...on_735063&feature=iv

Good grief! I didn't believe anyone, I mean anyone, would think that what I wrote I took seriously or actually believe!!!!!

I thought Lettieri was carying a Python as well but I seem to recall it was a 6-inch. I thought Degorgio was carrying a model 27 4-inch.

That he did! And loaded up some ammo with garlic or something, in hopes of achieving greater lethality on the shark. May have been mercury. I think the audience was supposed to think the bullets were explosive or poisonous.

I need to watch, "Jaws" again, although the book was quite a bit better. But film has that visual impact...

Most cop and private eye shows from the mid-1950's-on used Model 36's. Examples included,"Bourbon Street Beat", "77 Sunset Strip", "Hawaii Five-O", and "Peter Gunn."

(Some of these shows also showed the cast with Colts in some episodes.)

I think M-10's were used by Heather Locklear and some others on, "T.J. Hooker", but Wm. Shatner had a Colt MK III .357, if memory serves. At least one M-10 was on, "Soldier of Fortune", carried by a senior cop in, I think, Columbia.

"Adam 12" had both Model 14's and Model 15's, the latter in later episodes. This reflected changes in LAPD issues.

I have a vague rcollection that Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. used a snub M-19 in "The FBI".

The M-66 wasn't listed by the OP, but one figured very prominently in, "Broken Arrow", a Travolta film. The cute female park ranger had it. It was in many scenes throughout most of the movie.

"Bourbon Street Beat" had a M-27 or pre-27 in the office safe. 3.5-inch barrel. The PI's took it out when they wanted something more potent than their snub .38's.

I really don't recall the other models listed as being used much. Of course, how are you going to distinguish between a M-36 and a M-37 on screen?

Oh: "RCMP" used M-10's in the episodes that I saw, which were made before the M-5946 (?) replaced revolvers on the Force. I've only seen this Canadian show on a sporadic basis, and not recently. One scene that really stuck with me was when a constable told a drunk smart alec guy to get out of a car, or he'd shoot him. In the US, that would have been murder, had he done it. I interfaced with the RCMP from an air base (USAF) in Canada, and can tell you, the Mounties left the impression that they were much more feared than are most American cops. With good cause!

I'll leave the M-29 to someone else. I think we all know it's main claim to film stardom, though.

Doug, I'm sorry. This just seemed the better way to answer your question. Maybe someone else will use your chart.

T.J. Hooker carried a medium-frame Dan Wesson with pistol barrel pack in the trunk of his radio car. His partner caried a pencil barrel M-10.

In the 1950s Dragnet (the logo you posted) Joe carried a Colt Detective Special. In the 1960s Dragnet (the picture of Joe you posted) he carried not a M-36, but a M-10 with a round butt. He clearly showed the gun several times in the series and it was a K frame size and held 6 shots.

Watch this episode. Friday's gun is clearly shown to a woman up close
