I was saddened to hear that Donald Stratton, one of the last survivors from the crew of the U.S.S. Arizona during the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack, has died. As I understand it, only two other Arizona survivors are still living. Stratton was 97, and was only 19 years old at the time of the attack.

He managed to escape The Arizona by pulling himself hand over hand across a burning oil slick on a 70-feet rope extending over to the the nearby U.S.S. Vestal. Someone had ordered that rope to be cut, but the sailor that got that order deliberately disobeyed it. That probably saved Stratton's life.

Another member of the Greatest Generation is gone.

Hand salute and a moment of silence for his passing.

John

I too was saddened to hear of his passing. I read his book and watched everything I could about him. By the way, the sailor that saved those men was Joe George. I thank the Lord he died in his sleep. Rest In Peace, Don.
News media to self absorbed in Kobe to mention a true hero! I'll stop there before I get dinged!

Gunners Mate Second Class Stratton, may you Rest In Peace.
Fair Winds and Calm Seas Sir.
Not afraid to admit that each time I read of the passing of one of these heroes, I tear up. I feel like we have lost another piece of our nations greatest legacies with each passing. I don't believe we will ever see another generation that is able to withstand the trials and tribulations that they survived in their lives.
