Rail Covers?

This will probably open a can of worms, but what do you all recommend for some good rail covers? I'm not looking to spend a lot of money, but am interested in your favorites.

ERGO ladder rails...best bang for the buck

Virtually all the Rail covers are made by ERGO, except the no-name ones on eBay. All those are made in China.

Personally, buy whatever you can get the cheapest. The difference between the cheap ones and the expensive ones are pretty much just the price.

thats why i mentioned ERGO instead of a major brand name

I am using Surefire ladder rail covers which are really not rail covers as such but fill in the slots in the rail and makes it much better in the hand. I use the Surefire ladder covers on the top and bottom rails with MagPul rail cover on the side rails which are a true rail cover. This setup gives me the desired feel in the forearm of the 15-22. It works for me but may not be for everybody.

Rail ladders and rail covers are not the same thing. You have ladders. There really isn't such a thing as ladder covers. They are either one or the other.

I just have some of the cheap UTG rail covers on mine. They feel good, stay in place, and were inexpensive. Look on Amazon.

LaRue index clips are pretty cool IMO. A pain in the rear to remove though! It is a mix between ladders and covers.

Ergo ladders work too!

The $12/4 ebay ones work just fine. It's a durable plastic with a soft touch.

I went with the Magpul XTM rail covers (black)...3 pkgs at $7.99 each at Sportsman Warehouse here in Las Vegas. It was enough to cover the left and right sides.

I initially went with the XTM on my AR. Nice, but it made the hand guard diameter a bit too bulky. Took those off and I am now running the Magpul LADDER RAIL PANEL. So much more comfortable imo.

Not running rail covers on the 15-22. I got a Magpul carbine hand guard.

Make sure the slats on the new rails are centered in the indents on the gun rails. You put the bottom on the rail and press on the top. It takes a little pressure. They should snap in place where you are pressing. Then just run your finger down the rail to get the remainder in place.

Magpul xt covers... Covered both sides and it cost under $20

I use the utg covers, cheap, easy to snap on, stay in place, and comfy. (At least for my large hands) covered all the spots I need and then some for about 7 or 8 bucks (12pack). Seen knock offs go for $3 a 24 pack but can't attest for their quality.

Magpul xtm's are hard plastic!

Oops you asked about the XT panels. Not 100% sure about those, but IIRC they too are hard plastic.

anyone find any red or blue ladder rail covers? I got a cheap set and tried painting them, didnt work out too well.

I was rocking a big mish mash of the Magpul XTM and UTG rubbery ones on the sides and the Magpul ladders on the empty spots on the top and bottom. Just got in a set of the Kwikguard long covers for the sides and a couple of 3 packs of the Surefire ladders to fill in the empty spaces on the top, bottom, and sides.

Haven't mounted em up yet, but the Surefire ladders I got seem to actually have more bulk and shape than the Magpul (ERGO made I believe) to me. They seem a little wider, have a little scallop running down the middle that winds up flush w/ the rail and taper down to the rail on each side. They are also alot more flexy and maybe not quite as grippy but were way cheaper (pack of 3 14 space ladders were ~$15 on Amazon, Prime eligible). I'm thinking they'd be too floppy to use for my shell deflector add on, but seem like they'll work pretty well as rail covers.

Edit: After mounting them up on the rifle rather than the 45 deg adapter, the Surefire ladders are definitely lower profile than the Magpul ones. They look and feel pretty good though IMO and seem like they should protect the lips of the rails just as well.
