Greetings. I have viewed this forum for a number of years and learned a lot, but I just got around to joining.

My rambling question(s) have to do with a compact 3rd Gen DAO, or something that would have a very similar feel. I have been largely a revolver guy, but picked up one of the 4586's that Bud's had on clearance a while back. I really like the pistol, and it has sold me on 3rd Gen guns.

However, the butt on the 4586 is a bit long, and is a bit difficult for me to conceal underneath my typical everyday clothing, so I am thinking of something a bit more discreet – with the same operating system.

Obviously a 3953/4 would be top of the list…but they seem a bit hard to come by. (Of course I am a couple years late on the flood of Police turn ins!). A 4556 would be good, but those are even more difficult to find (and a good deal more expensive). My understanding is that the 4053 (pre-TSW) was built on the 45 ACP frame, and thus should fit my holster for the 4586 (which, by the way, Ray Cory over at Lobo made for me…it is excellent!). I am not sure I really want to add .40 S&W to my inventory, but it really wouldn't be the end of the world…

So, my rambling question is…does anyone have any input on these choices? Have I missed some other obvious alternatives? I have wondered about an M&P9c…are the triggers on those pistols anything like a 3rd Gen DAO? Is there anything from another maker that is similar?

Thanks for indulging me!

I have a 3954 (single stack 9) and my wife, Luscious, an M&P9C. Totally different machines. The 3954 feels exactly like a double action revolver. The M&P feels more like a Glock in that there is an initial take-up before you feel any resistance. Also, trigger pull of the M&P is much lighter after engagement.
That being said, if I were to carry a double stack, the M&P9C would be it.

Went to the M&P, after owning a Glock 19 for a number of years. The M&P was "OK", but I really missed my 6904. Eventually, I found a nice one, but in the process learned about some of the other 3rd GEN pistols. I now also own a 3913 and 3953 (which I carry). It took a bit of getting used to, but I really like the size, feel and accuracy of this little pistol! Yes, it took some patience on my part to purchase both the 13, and the 53. Definitely worth the search.

Hello and welcome.I think a compact 3rd gen gun to fit your needs is the Chief's Special series. The CS9 is a shortened 3913 and has a really nice Double Action Trigger.I also am a old time revolver shooter and like DAO as compared to TDA so I had my CS9 converted to DAO and the trigger smoothed further by the S+W Armorers. If you are lucky you could find one in DAO configuration by shopping around.....Good Luck....Mike

I carry a 457S nearly every day. Sometimes I carry my 3913 if I need something a little smaller. The 457 models are pretty easy to find but the stainless slide version seems to be harder to come by. I think the 457 tends to be a good value but it will probably not fit in your holster designed for the 4586 because of the difference in the shape of the slides.

Thanks for your input, everyone. It has given me some good food for thought. Looks as though an MP9c isn't what I'm looking for.

The idea of getting a TDA converted to a DAO would open up a lot of possibilities. (And yes, I am aware that this would not give the half-cock DAO of the originals, but the quarter-cock of the TSW's). Does anyone know if Smith & Wesson still does this work, and if so what the going rate is?
