Random 3rd Gen Thoughts...

I would say yes. At the time of the ban (1994), Smith was shipping 3rd Gen guns with plastic base plates. At least 59xx guns had plastic base plates as the gun I bought in 1993 came with three 14 round magazines with plastic base plates.

These also only have two witness holes in the magazine body and later magazines had more. These are either 2nd Gen, Transitional, or early 3rd Gen magazines.

Added photos,

do the metal floorplates indicate a pre-ban vintage ?

They fit in my 5906, which was made in 1989. I haven't tried running a magazine through them, but I can't see why they wouldn't work well.

I plan to sell them on in the near future.

14 round steel base plate........ 1st or 2nd gen mags........ love them for 'Primary" concealed carry mag in a high cap.........

'3rdGenMagitus'-what's the cure for that ?
I think it's like any expensive addiction. :) You're good as long as the money is there and the supply is there. ;)

It's when the money runs out or the supply dries up or both that you go into a wild sort of panic mode and then you're in big trouble.

I'm pretty much out of mag money until September after putting in an order for more CS9 magazines with MidwayUSA. :o I'm actually selling off all of my 10mm magazines just so I can pay for more pre-ban 15-round 5906 magazines. :(

What a crazy hobby!!!

For you guys in Mass, KTP in Kittery Maine regularly gets 3rd gen Smiths in. I usually go by there once a week. Have a 4506 no dash on hold now.

How did you manage to do that? KTP refuses to sell used handguns to Massachusetts residents! :o

I live near there in New Hampshire. I believe they will do a transfer to your ffl if the gun is Mass compliant. I've heard the help speaking to Mass residents and got that impression. Might be worth a phone call to the gun Dept to inquire.

I've called them and emailed them many times in the past. They will not sell a used handgun to a Massachusetts resident under any circumstances even if it is MA-compliant. Call them if you don't believe me.

Theoretically, they will sell a brand new MA-compliant handgun to a Massachusetts resident (transferred through a MA FFL, of course). The problem is that they don't typically carry the MA-compliant versions of any brand new handguns so it's something of a moot point.

The problem with the used guns is two-fold: 1) They say they've been burned (on MA sales) too many times in the past and simply don't wish to get burned anymore. 2) They do not understand MA law & regs in regard to dealing with used handguns and they fear our loony moonbat AG lady greatly.

BTW, Cabela's has essentially the same policy as do many New Hampshire gun shops. Some NH shops refuse all handgun sales (new and used) to Massachusetts residents.

That is too bad. I was by there this afternoon and asked about it. It is of course just as you said. I decided not to take the 4506 they were holding for me. Very dirty with green slime inside. Seemed in good mechanical condition,
but I could foresee significant cleaning time.

Sorry things didn't work out on your Model 4506. Green slime sounds pretty awful. I've turned down more than one gun because of excessive dirtiness/fouling... although one I went back for after they dropped the price down into bargain basement land. :p

Yes, the various "No handgun sales to MA residents" policies of KTP, Cabela's and others hurt us a lot. :o There is an SW99 .45 still sitting down in a PA Cabela's store that they refuse to sell to me. Same with a recent 3rd Gen up at KTP. I keep bugging them... hoping for a policy change... but they keep saying no.

As I've mentioned before, our very own MA Cabela's store won't sell used MA-compliant handguns to MA residents. Sounds unbelievable but it's true. That's how much they misunderstand our laws & regs and fear our lunatic anti-2A AG lady.
