I am new to shooting and I need som advice when I go to the range a bring a S&W M&P 22 and a Ruge SR9c, each goes into their own 511 tactical pistol case and the go into a duffle bag with a small tool kit. I just purchased a ultimate shooting case from Chear Than Dirt that is plastic hard brief case type. I am taking out the foam to save till I know what I am going to do, my magazines will go into magazine carriers and I will place the guns in locked in a silicone gun sock, I will also have eye and ear protection as well as speed loaders for the guns and a avid ruger gun tool.
As far as ammo I keep it in the car in a plastic 30 cal box under lock and key with silica packs, I purchase ammo and a target at the range.
I am tired of going to the range looking like I am moving out of my house, and I look like a fool at the range because I keep everything under lock and key for security, if I were to be stopped by police to and from the range, I just want to keep everyone safe and secure.
Thanks

A lot depends on where you are as far as transport of a handgun meeting your laws.

In OK, range bags are very popular with competitors to carry the necessary for a match.
Here's what I use:

I have 3 different bags depending on usage. I use the same S&W bag that was linked in the previous post when I go to a match. When I'm going to the practice range alone, I use a "Bucket Boss" bag (basically a carpenters bag) that I had lying around. If I'm going to the range with my wife or son (or both). I have a wheeled bag that I got at Office Depot (I can get 3 sets of ear muffs, 3 pistols and ammo in it). I don't like carrying more than one bag into the range. I have a CC permit so putting the ammo and arm into the same bag is not a problem. HTH

Range bags

I just spent the morning cleaning out and re-organizing my bags(been raining here)....I have a separate bag for handguns.....rifles.....shotgun (clay shooting)....In each bag I have(electronic) muffs ( behind the head band for rifles & shotguns, so that I can mount a long gun and not break the seal on the muffs....ear plugs ( I always wear double protection to preserve what hearing I have left), shooting glasses, clear & tinted, range rod ( handgun bag), screwdriver set for sight adjustment, sight adj tool for AR's in rifle bag, Otis compact cleaning kit in all three bags, notebook and pen in all three bags, extra batteries for the electronic muffs, and I keep a Pact electronic timer in my pistol bag with xtra batteries, keep laser range finder in the rifle bag, along with wind meter, staple guns and boxes of staples, roll of duct tape, targets, target paster's.....keep my spotting scope and stand in separate case, along with shooting matt....and I have a separate case for my "brass magnets" which are mesh ground cloth's that are used to catch my brass....and all ammo goes into GI ammo cans. And a small tool box for gun tools, and my chrono when I take it.... and a first aid kit... All of the above goes into a large US Gov't surplus hard shell transport case that is secured into the bed of my truck. So I have one hard case in the bed of my truck that contains everything I will need on the range. Firearms are secured in pelican hard cases, in the cab.

My go-to range bag is a $6 mechanics tool bag from a Military Surplus store. Here's what I usually have:

Nice ear plugs and muffs.
Cheap ear plugs, in case someone forgets theirs.
"Standard" sized screwdriver with quality bits (to avoid stripping screws).
Gerber Suspension multi-tool.
1/16" punch, mainly for poly guns.
Cleaning rod with patches.
Small tube of froglube.
Ziploc bags for picking up brass.
Stick-on targets.

Looks great.

Are there any similar bags that are unmarked that folks have found? I'd kind of like to keep a lower profile than with something marked "Smith & Wesson" prominently.

i have 2 pistol/ rev./ mag. bags. cleaning/ range bxs. 2. found the craftsman bags, the 10" & 22". do the main carring to the range. the small bag can carry your weapons and ammo, allen wrenches, screwdrivers, ear muff's, a cleaning rod, for if any FTF's. i usually clean the weapns at our indoor range. air cond., bathrooms, water/ soda machines and food, micro wave. plus someone will usually come in for the indoor range and BS w/ you if they haven't seen me for a while. the larger bag has everything to disassemble the weapons and clean. and if packed right the 10" bag fits inside the larger bag, no transfer of weapons. ^^^^ good info above threads. no one can really know what you carry out of the house in the bags. a suggestion, the long bags that come w/ the expandable chairs carry rifles, shotguns good, and they have a shoulder strap on them.

Just about every vendor has one (Midway, Brownells, Cabellas, Bass Pro), or go to Amazon.com and search for range bag. You'd be surprised at the amount of firearm related stuff they have.

Transportation gun laws are pretty lax in my state. Since you haven't listed where you're from here is what I use. Walmart has 2 handgun black Winchester range back that works pretty well for me. Here's a youtube vid that is similar to the one i own. It's not my video. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=syh52VvP9uU&desktop_uri=/watch?v=syh52VvP9uU

I only bring the amount of ammo I intend to shoot. It helps control costs and lighten the bag load. I see guys bring 30 cal ammo boxes and they are the ones making 2-3 trips to the car for all their stuff. Not my cup of tea.

Hello, my name is Rastoff and I am a bag-a-holic. I have tried too many bags and will probably get more. Even so...

Here's the one I use for pistol stuff and general range trips:
policestuff_2281_1695790136

LA Police Gear Jumbo Bail Out Bag
It's large enough to carry all the stuff I need for one day at the range, but small enough that it keeps me from overloading it and I can still carry it.

I can get three pistols plus ammo for all. Then there's the list of things that just stay in the bag:
Stapler
UpLula
StripLula
Leatherman MUT
Timer
Plastic bags for casings
Safety Glasses
Magazines for various guns
Pen
Cleaning supplies
Allen wrenches
#2 and #1 Philips
Punch
2 rags
Ear protection (I actually carry these with me all the time. They are small)
Gloves

I'm sure there's more that I'm forgetting. The bottom line is it's a really nice bag. For $30 I'll bet you can't find a better one.

Insect repellant..the horse flies at our FL range might carry off small women and kids.

Best.
How is this a problem? It just keeps the range clear of the riff raff. ;)

I just throw everything I might need into an old briefcase or small duffel. A bag is pretty much a bag. You don't need a special 5.11 bag. But it's OK if you WANT one. But please don't get it from cheaper than dirt. I see no need for locking things up when they are in your car with you or under your eyeballs at the range.

I do usually keep each gun in a separate bag like the ones sold by Midway (about $15) that also hold 6-8 extra mags I load up before I go to the range.

I usually bring 2 or 3 pistols to the range. I keep the pistols either in the factory plastic box they were shipped in, or I have one universal plastic case to hold a non plastic box having pistol.
I carry them in a Browning tackle bag. Just remove the 4 plastic tackle box trays.
Browning® 360 or 370 Satchel Bags or Systems | Bass Pro Shops

The side pockets hold a box of 525 .22lr, there is a holder for safety glasses molded into the top, and has room for pistol cases, ear muffs, paper targets, roll of tape, and a stapler. My cleaning kit does not fit in the bag, but with the should strap on the bag, I can just carry the cleaning kit in hand.

I use a good size gym bag that has one large area that contains up to 3 pistols, ear muffs, ammo etc.. The bag has a couple of zippered side pockets for smaller items. It fits everything I need and it was cheap, it was given to my wife as a freebie by the co. she works for and it has no gun MFR. labels on it.

I use a S&W Range bag that I ordered from S&W's web site. It has about the right amount of pockets and the main compartment is large enough to hold muffs, 3 different M&P's and lots of ammo.

I dont like telling the world what I have so no labels advertising guns on the sides.. So I use tool bags from a big box hardware store. also cheaper. ebay has a ton of range bags all different prices.

I use duffel bags - nothing special.

I have one loaded with ear plugs, target tape and other stuff I've forgotten to take in times past (eg: staples. Staple gun, rags, gun oil, gloves, nuts (the kind you eat), extra ear plugs , and what ever else I wished I had last time.

I put ammo, magazines and pistol(s) in a second duffel bag and I'm set.

No special container - but I'm not as organized as some!
