Range Mascot

I have been taking my new 5 month old wiener dog Zeb to the range for our .22 fun matches. He is quickly becoming a big hit and draws a lot of attention. During target resets I let him run wild down range and they find his puppy antics of chasing anything that moves very entertaining. A few of guys have started referring to him as the range Mascot . I took a couple of cell phone pictures as he was resting on the bench today so pardon the poor quality.

I am being very careful, I only take him when we are shooting .22lr rifles, he has not been around any big boomers. After the matches some folks will break out the center fire guns, but we leave before they start. None of us wear ear protection while shooting in the .22 matches, it just does not get that loud from the sub sonic target grade ammo out of long barrels. Also the pictures of him actually on the bench were taken during a lunch break, during the shooting he is generally under the bench or well behind the line investigating everything on the ground and looking for dropped scraps from lunch.

In the late 80's, I was stationed at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls Texas. The military range had a pet goat that resided there. They used him to keep the grass trimmed on the hillsides. He was as deaf as a rock but was like a big dog and we'd wrassle with him during breaks. Seems that base safety did not want them operating mowers over the backstop and local command would not let them just allow the grass/weeds to grow unabated. The goat was the range NCO's answer.

Cute dog. Even 22s will damage his and your hearing over time. If you search aviation ear protection for dogs you can find noise reduction muffs for dogs. They were developed for dogs who ride in small planes but work very well for the range also.
