Range queens...

My re-barreled, re-built and re-blued 4th Model 44 HE, also called a 1950 Model 44 Target, is the DA revolver that goes to the range most often. It usually shares space in the gun case with a 3-screw, Flattop Ruger 357 or 44.

The other 44 Special that may threaten the 4" for a favorite range Smith is this M24-3 with a 5" replacement barrel.

I've got two 45 ACP revolvers in the works that may give the 44 Specials some competition for range time. No pictures of these, yet. (smile)

New to forum

Hey guys,
Just stumbled across this site and liked what I was reading.I own several guns, but my favorite is a 10-6 that I picked up at a pawn shop in 2001 for $200 bucks. I couldn't believe my luck as the gun is at least 95%er. Over the years I've owned several Smiths and they were all great guns but I've always been partial to the K frames. I'll try to get photos as soo as I learn how to do it. I"ll have to get my son to help me figger it out.

Dave, do those grips have figure in them or is that the camera lighting? Very good lucking range revolver that one. I think I'm partial to a 5" barrel.

They started out as checkered Goncalo Alves targets. A member here worked them down to a "coke bottle" contour for me which is what you are seeing. They are a little narrow because of going below the factory impressed checkering but as long as I don't put them on a Magnum they feel pretty good.

This Model 15 makes a great range companion.

My all-time favorite handgun for range use, a Model 17-4 I bought new in 1980.

A really gratifying "Brand-X" range queen, a Colt Officer's Model Match from 1957. Python actions have absolutely nothing on these.

Thanks for the welcome Mr. Crabtree. I already have to make a correction to my post. I said I had a 10-6 but it's a 10-5. I need a brighter light on my desk here so I'll quit hitting wrong keys! Anyway the gun is a great shooter and has the best trigger of any I've ever owned! I never go to the range without it. It's a real sweetheart.

Driheat, I had read somewhere that Gen. Goerge Patton carried that same combo during WWII. Nice guns there.

These are by far the ones I shoot the most, in fact I'll be shooting a 2700 with them tomorrow and a Distinguished Revolver match. The 625 is being sold and will soon be replaced by a custom Model 28 that I've converted to shoot 45ACP. David Sams is installing a custom 6" barrel and it wears a custom set of Nill grips. Pictures will be posted as soon as it arrives.

Whether intentional or not, the similarity of the grip texture and the background texture makes for one cool image. Nice picture cprher.

One that almost always goes with me, and invariably gets shot, is a Model 18-2 with an appreciable amount of blue wear. As time goes on I shoot revolvers (much) more and quite a few .22s too. Fun, economical, good practice for the centerfires--and no cleanup to speak of.

In May I shot a personal best of 2521 with them. 2565 is the breakpoint for master class and that now is my goal for this year with wheelguns. Considering I'm 57, and factoring my rate of improvement, I'll be 98-99 years of age when I break 2650.

My favorite range queen is my Model 28-2, Serial #N96xx. It left the Smith & Wesson factory on June 15, 1970.
